Chapter eleven: Now We're Even.

"Daryl," I panted, "slow down, I think we lost him." At that moment, I felt terrible about not trusting Daryl first. Of course I should have trusted Daryl, he was a very smart guy and I should have gone with him instead of going the other way. It was wrong, I was wrong and I hated to admit it but it was the truth.

"We need to get away from this area first then we can talk." Daryl mumbled, running off and I soon followed. We ran for a few minutes before finally leaving the forest area and back onto the road in the middle of the night. Scared. Alone. Afraid of what was coming next. All my hope was lost again.

"I'm sorry," I whispered to Daryl, "I'm sorry I didn't trust you."

"It's fine," he mumbled, "you thought he was still the same guy you knew but he wasn't and that's okay, we all make mistakes."

"Let me make it up to you," I offered, "you have done so much for me already."

"You don't need to." He said as we continued to walk the long road, again. I felt like I was dying of everything that could kill you nowadays.

"I do, Daryl. I was in denial and it was all my fault." I cried.

He put his arm around me and pulled me towards him in a tight hug. "Beth, listen to me. It's not your fault that Daniel was a bigger jerk than you thought and it's not your fault that we almost got killed."

"But it is." I buried my face in his chest, feeling the warmth.

"No, it's not," he paused to think, "you know, the reason why I'm here is not because I'm the best at killing walkers, the reason why I'm here is because of you."

"Me?" I looked up at him in disbelief.

"Yes, you. You have been saving my ass and you don't even know it. Beth, I'm here because of you." He smiled.

My heart tingled inside of me as he said those words, making me wonder what he really thought of me. I never thought he would say that and I never thought that he would even admit it.

I looked up at him as he looked down and I took his hand and kissed him gently on the cheek. "Thank you." I whispered as we cuddled into each other for the rest of the night.

And it felt nice.

"This might come in use." Daryl said as we walked towards a car that didn't look like it was been here that long.

"Maybe we'll find some extra supplies." I added as I opened the car door. The keys were still in the ignition and the only thing we could use was the lighter I found in the back seat.

Daryl headed into the drivers seat and turned the key a few times before it roared to life. I smiled with joy as I sat in the passenger seat and slammed the door shut.

"Let's go." Daryl mumbled, driving the car down the long road. I put the window down and felt the breeze in my face and it felt so nice. With the wind in my hair, we were here and I would forever remember this feeling.

"Did you ever learn to drive?" Daryl asked, clutching the wheel.

I shook my head. "No, I never got around to it."

Daryl turned to me and smiled while stopping the car. "Then I guess it's time for you to learn." He looked around for what I was guessing was any sign of walkers but it was all clear.

"Really?" I asked with a smile.

He nodded. "Switch places with me and I'll teach you the basics."

He jumped out and I hopped into the drivers seats. "Now, you never know when you're going to need to drive a car away from walkers. It will probably save your life." He told me.

I nodded in agreement. "You're right."

"Okay, put your seatbelt on and start the engine." He ordered. I did exactly as he told me and I was feeling nervous since it was my first time driving. "Good, now pull the clutch and press the pedal and let the car move slowly." I did as he said and the car slowly moved and then came to a halt.

"What did I do?" I said, worried.

"You stalled, you just need to do it slowly and let it flow." He said.

As I pushed the pedal, something banged on the car window next to me. "Shit," I cursed, "a walker."

"Okay, keep going. Just ignore it." He said.

I drove the car but it came to a halt again, making us move in our seats.

"The car won't start." I said, turning the key multiple times.

Daryl looked around with his crossbow tightly around him. "Shit, more walkers."

"We're trapped." I said, looking around and finding that walkers were surrounding the car.

Daryl said nothing as he looked around the car to find that walkers had trapped us. "Find anything that can cover the windows." He finally said, checking the backseat at the same time.

"There's nothing here." I cried in fear.

"Don't worry," he placed his hand on my shoulder, "we will get out of this alive."

I nodded, feeling calmed. "Okay." I looked around for anything we could use to get out of this car since it had broken down and it was not in use anymore.

I took out my knife and put my hand on the door handle. "Beth, what are you doing?" Daryl pulled me away.

I turned to him. "Saving your ass for once." I opened the door, pushing the walkers out of my way and my knife plunged into many walkers that got in my way. I slammed the door shut to keep the walkers away from Daryl.

I kicked some walkers out of my way, clearing a path for myself and I ran down the road, directing the walkers away from the car. Daryl opened his car door and took his crossbow with him. He followed the walkers as I killed some and drawer them away.

One by one and they all dropped dead. I panted heavily and looked up at Daryl as we both collapsed onto the concrete road. "Now we're even."
