Chapter 9

"God gave men both a penis and a brain, but unfortunately not enough blood supply to run both at the same time."

-Robin Williams

"I hope you like baked salmon and fresh vegetables," Fake-mom smiled at the guests as we all walked into the dining area - a room with a huge oak table and just enough chairs to seat all of us.

"That sounds lovely, my dear," Fake-dad replied, looking at her with complete adoration as he took his seat at the head of the table while Alpha Brent occupied the chair at the other head and Luna Grace elegantly seated herself beside her husband.

Ryder automatically went for the spot on the other side of his father, and as he sat down, he grabbed Skylar's wrist and tugged her down with him - a sneaky move only noticed by Jackson and I - making it appear like she wanted to sit beside him.

I had to contain the gasp that threatened to come out as I watched Ryder's stealthy movement.

Jackson and I could only stand and watch with barely concealed anger as Skylar regained her composure and hesitantly took the spot beside Rydouche - not before sending us a pleading glance over her shoulder.

Alpha-Idiot better watch his back because the minute nobody's looking, I'm taking my fork and stabbing him in the balls.

If there's even any there.

Damn, look at me. I'm so on fire right now.

"Jackson, Calypso," Fake-mom looked at us, "Come take a seat, my darlings." We both did what she asked, taking the chairs on the other side of the table, and I made sure to sit across from Skylar in case she needed to convey anything through facial expressions.

The minute my butt hit the chair, I headed straight for the salmon, shoveling the pink fish into my mouth. The flavors exploded into my mouth and I felt like someone had handed me heaven on a plate.

I don't even care if I look like a total manner-less slob right now - I want to marry this fish.

"So, Jackson, son," Alpha Brent took a bite of salmon, "You'll be taking over the Alpha position in the next year or so - just like Ryder. How's it feel to know you'll be ruling the Gold Claws pack?"

Ugh, small talk.

Ew.

"Yes, sir," Fake-brother answered politely, "I'm definitely ready to take on the responsibility. It'll be a lot, but I can handle it." His expression was firm and he looked completely serious.

Seriously, these past two days - have I even seen the kid smile? He's TOO serious. That's it, I'm throwing some bread at your face, Peeta.

That's right, Hunger Games jokes are back, people. I repeat, they are back.

Luna Grace smiled, "Wonderful! You're so studious, Jackson - if only my little Ry-bug had that much seriousness when it came to the future of the pack."

Ry-bug? That sounds like the kind of nickname your trashy ex-girlfriend used to call you.

Rydouche groaned, "Mom, please! How many times have I told you not to call me that? And, come on! I'm just as studious as Jackson when it comes to the pack! I've made so many sacrifices!"

"Right - I'm sure the half-naked girls leaving in the morning know all about what kind of sacrifices you've been making," Alpha Brent snorted. Ryder tensed up, glaring daggers at his father, but didn't make a comment.
