Chapter 22
"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children."
-Nelson Mandela
At the end of my little rant, Ryder looked like he wanted to lunge at me.
And seeing that he has actually lunged at me multiple times, I'm familiar with the look.
The look only lasted a second though and one glance at my oversized bodyguards made him school his features into a more neutral expression. Still, I could tell he was livid and would've liked nothing more than to leave me a few scars to remember him by.
One of the major problems about the dynamic between Ryder and I was that we both thought the other was out of line. He was an Alpha wolf who thought that his birthright also gave him the right to do whatever he wanted, and I was a stubborn human who'd grown up in a world where the word Alpha was just a letter of the Greek alphabet.
"Deal with me, huh?" Ryder's tone was full of bitterness and loathing when he spoke and a cold smirk decorated his face, "So much for the sisterly blessing I guess."
"Yeah, I guess," I shot back, "Anyway, are we done here? Have you said all you needed to be said? As much as I love running in circles with you and my sister over the same fucking thing, I've got bigger responsibilities now. Bottom line, just don't fuck up whatever kind of relationship you have with my sister and we'll be cool."
And now that everyone is clear on that, I'm officially going to be spending my time dealing with other things that don't involve Skylar's crazy love life.
Because that shit is just too stressful.
With that, I turned and walked away with Hulk and Marcus immediately flanking my sides and blocking the other cells from my view. Once we had walked past the entrance and back into the luxurious marble hallways, Hulk pulled a familiar set of keys out of his pocket and locked the heavy iron doors.
"Would you like to return to the King, my Queen?" Hulk addressed me, keeping his eyes downcast. It was pretty clear that he wasn't going to get over his awkwardness with me anytime soon and although I'd probably say something if it continued on forever, I did think the whole situation was sort of amusing.
Be careful what you say to people, kids, you never know if you're talking to a real life Queen.
Actually, scratch that--that's bad advice.
Realistically, unless you find yourself also in a shitty Wattpad werewolf novel, your chances of meeting a Queen or any royalty at all is pretty slim.
So, seriously--I wouldn't count on it.
"You know what?" I scratched the back of my neck, "Could you just take me to my room or something instead? I'm pretty exhausted and I'd like to lie down and take, like, a forty hour power nap, you know?"
It was the truth. As nice as Mason's company was, the initial adrenaline and energy boost that came with flying to a new country, meeting a King and almost getting mauled by Ryder was starting to wear off and now all I felt was a heavy exhaustion that seemed to sink into my bones.
Not to mention, I haven't had like any coffee today.
Honestly, it's a miracle I'm even able to function.
"Yes, Your Majesty, whatever you wish," Hulk gestured me to follow him and Marcus, "The King has arranged for you and your family to have chambers near to his own in case you were to need him."
