Chapter 20

"There is no such thing as a soulmate...and who would want there to be? I don't want half of a shared soul. I want my own damn soul."

-Rachel Cohn

Jackson and I glanced at each other as Courtney walked away.

We didn't even have to say anything - we were both mutually aware of how ridiculous that encounter had been.

But, hey, at least Courtney actually knows what she wants and is honest about it.

I can't say the same for others.

*Cough* Skylar *Cough*

Speaking of said main character, the door to the study opened up and Skylar and Zack walked out. Skylar's face was puffy from tears, and Zack appeared forlorn.

Well, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that didn't end happily.

"Hey," Skylar muttered when she spotted us, "Uh, we're done." She glanced over at me, ashamed doe-eyes on display, but I couldn't bring myself to give her any kind of consolation. Her decision to pursue Ryder didn't sit right with me at all, and I wasn't about to relieve her guilt in making it.

"So, um," Zack cleared his throat, "I don't mean to be, like, blunt or anything, but when exactly can I get home? I kind of spent all my money to get here, and didn't exactly tell my parents either. I've been dodging their calls, but I'm pretty sure my ass is getting grounded for life."

Damn, poor kid.

Spends all his money, risks losing the trust of his parents and what does he get in return?

Broken up with.

You know what he needs?

He needs the my-life-currently-sucks package...which includes: cocooning yourself into a blanket, having an endless supply of junk food, a laptop, and a netflix subscription so you can watch a ton crappy romantic comedies and mock the shit out of them.

Or, at least that's what I do.

"Well, it looks you might have to dodge a few more calls," Jackson responded, "Seeing as you're a human who is now aware of the supernatural world and not a mate to a wolf, things are little more complicated. They'll want to make sure you don't tell anyone of our existence."

Ah, the typical 'we-must-keep-our-existence-an-absolute-secret' rule.

I mean, I get it. I highly doubt human beings would react super great to the idea that actual werewolves exist. There would certainly be a lot of scientific testing, and overall mayhem.

I'm really just surprised they've managed to keep it a secret for so long.

These idiots are hardly hiding.

Zack blanched, "What do you mean, 'they'll want to make sure I don't tell anyone'? That phrase can have a lot of meanings!" His voice reached a slightly hysterical note.

"Well, uh," Jackson seemed to shift uncomfortably, "Most of the time when humans who aren't mated find out about the supernatural world, they just kill them."

Geez, that sounds a little harsh.

"Excuse me?" Zack shrieked, "I came here voluntarily, okay? Had I known I would be killed, I don't think I would've come! I mean, I'm a nice guy, but I'm not that nice of a guy."
