Chapter 2 - Meeting the Boss

Jade is described by many as fearless; with her deep brown eyes and strong features that she got from her father. Apart maybe from her small natural red lips which she inherited from her grandmother. She has jet black hair, which if not tied on a ponytail, is braided. Seldom does she release her natural locks, which she assumed should be, at best, ruined by her constant braiding them.

I am proven wrong, I thought, as I stare at my still prominent dark locks neatly falling on both sides of my shoulder. My hair is clipped at the base with a white pin, matching my dress which is put on me, its holes on the right places.

The dress extended just above my knees and I’ve been fighting the urge to yank it and find something more conservative to wear. It is white fabric and the dress straps form an X on my back and parallel lines in front, it is made of cotton, the wardrobe expert informed me. I wear no make-up except from powder, eyeliner and very thin blue eye shadow, thank God.

The stylist nearly succeeded forcing me into much more complicated face paint but I ran away from her. As soon as I managed to put the dress in me properly. And now, I hide in the bathroom looking at my white high-heeled strapped sandals that twirled up at my legs.

The door bangs open and it pukes the stylist, raging mad. Because I tripped her awhile ago while she was chasing me, knocking her off and ruining her perfectly chiffoned hair, that is what she tells me. Though I have no idea what chiffon means and what it possibly have to do with hairs.

“Hi!” I exclaim, crawling under her rainbow-colored dress and outside the door, sprinting away from the bathroom.

Thugd.

I was thrown a yard backwards by the person in front of me. I look up and see my parents glaring at me.

“Enough with the trouble Jade,” orders my father, the most powerful Feliran and leader of Felran today.

“You just discovered you’re an air manipulator three days ago. See how childish you act.” my mother, another powerful leader, speaks in her most controlled and formal voice.

Flasback:

It has been three days since the incident on the Browne’s house. They healed the Buus bites by an herb called Nary. I didn’t know they had a cure for Buus bites. I am pretty sure no one tried to rescue me from a huge blister that didn’t go away for a week four months ago. But I didn’t complain, I was in no state for arguing. I just had the biggest possible bomb dropped on me that day. I am gifted and an air manipulator at that. Great.

After treating me, I bid them goodbye and went back to my house even if I’ve still got one more hour before six. I opened the main door and I found my parents seated at the sofa. I see they are 1 hour earlier than what Rose have said. I ignored them and went directly towards my room without greeting them. They stopped me just after I passed them, something I have predicted so I said.

“I’m an air manipulator.”

That electrocuted them. So I left and went to my room before they can recover. I laid on my bed focused on the faint burning feel of the medicine on my Buus bites or just about anything but the fact that I am an air manipulator. Specifically the only person in the whole Felran who can manipulate air.

I groaned inwardly, shut my eyes tight and forced myself to sleep.

When I woke up the next day, I’m very hungry. I realized I haven’t eaten for near 48 hours now. I trudged to my door into the kitchen. To my utter relief,  I found Rose cooking.
