Chapter 11 - Befriending the Enemy
I blink slowly, trying to calm my nerves. Maybe I am mistaken, I thought but it doesn’t work. I KNOW that voice. Since I was four when my butterfly dreams turned into bizarrely scary ones. The dreams don’t repeat or maybe sometimes the scariest ones come back but it’s always the same voice. The voice that talks whenever I am to die. I won’t forget that.
“Welcome! To all of you here, you passed.”
“You passed?”
“What is she talking about?”
Murmurs filled the air but I keep quiet. Trying to stay calm.
“You know that voice too,” Someone whispers behind me. I turn around to see En crouched, as if ready to kill. Though, I am sure it isn’t me he wants to kill.
“Y-y-yes. D-do you?” I stammer.
“How would I forget the voice who badly wants me dead?” he sneers.
“Nightmares?” I ask breathless. My heart is pounding hard against my ribcage.
“Yes.” I look into his eyes and see he is telling the truth. I am not the only one having those nightmares!
“I see Thirty-two Rounins are here. Good Job! You are now reduced to your original number. For the three, I’m sorry but you are now just a normal gifted.” The same voice states.
“Before I dismiss you all, I have announcements.” As she talks there is a tug on my shirt, I look and see Jay tugging on my bag, his eyes sleepy.
“Jay, you should’ve stayed asleep!” I scold.
“Some stupid kid stepped on my foot,” he reasons.
“Oh.”
“So, what is happening?” he questions looking at the Rounin-filled lawn. “Last thing I know is you battling the giants”
“Huh? You were awake when we were healing you,” I say.
He shrugs. “Maybe awake physically not uh, consciously?”
“That doesn’t make sense,” I say, smiling.
“Whatever. So, what happened?” I tell him the story from him being smashed against the wall until the announcement part omitting the way I and En recognized the voice.
“Gale is awake too.” Jay says pointing at Gale stirring.
“And your other friend,” En adds. I go to Gale and usher him into our clump.
“Why’d you wake up?” I ask Gale.
“Uh, I don’t know. The speakers?” he says.
I look at where he was lying awhile ago, and sure enough the speakers are there. I laugh lightly.
“Is everyone okay?” Chesca is asking.
“Yes. I think so,” I reply.
“Shh!” Someone shushes us. We stop talking in time to hear the last announcement.
“These are the first ten Rounins who arrived, not by order. Ranking is based on beginner standards” The speaker booms then another voice filled the air.
“Tracy Mcjed of country Cordon. Defense, ten Intelligence, seven Strength nine Elemental Skill, nine Medic Skill, five.”
“Jade Masters of country Lowdell. Defense, ten Intelligence, nine Strength, nine Elemental Skill, ten Medic Skill, five.” So, why do they have to announce that?
