Chapter 17 - Wonderful Irony

The vast room is made of marble. Black marble, that if it weren't for the big originless light above we'll all be engulfed by darkness by now. I have no idea where the light came from, no chandeliers or light bulbs or sun rays just plain light. It is deserted, apart from the Rounins crowded on the mouth of the door and a young woman in the center of the room.

"Come in," she motions to us that we can sit anywhere. I follow Gale but stare at him in horror when he sits right in front of the teacher. Looking undeniably excited for his very first lesson in Lyran. Only him sat down, everyone is looking incredulously at him. But it's Gale. He's oblivious to what others think.

Jay moves forward and sits beside his brother. Now, the people is staring at them both. I sigh and bit back the urge to laugh. If this two is in the mood, you know. They do something like this.

"Don't be shy," the teacher urges us. I gather up the courage and sit beside Gale. He winks playfully at me. I stick my tongue out in response. Chesca follows and sits beside me. After a few awkward silence, the other Rounins started sitting down.

"Ichi; Suru," the teacher says. I skimmed the guidebook given for us last night and recognized ichi, meaning first and suru, meaning focus. It is the one of the six fundamentals of sorcery.

"Suru is our first lesson and some say it is the hardest fundamental to achieve," she starts. "Of course, you know you have a gift but that doesn't necessarily mean that you perfectly know how to control it. Granted, maybe because you're Rounins, that you have quite the control with your elements. But in almost all instances, the way you mold this is wrong that's why it takes up a lot of energy." she makes eye contact to everyone in the room. Her eyes piercing on each of them.

"We need focus in our lives. Because we can only be called true experts if we manage to conserve vigor," vigor means energy "Sometimes, a mage's value is determined by the amount of skills one can perform in a specific energy level," she stops.

"A demonstration, perhaps?" she offers and then when we nod, she takes out a grey ball. "This is a rensitive ball, it is an instrument used to develop ones focus. It is highly sensitive to unshifting gaze," she gently takes out the ball and drop it on the floor. She sits in front of it and closes her eyes.

After a minute or so of awkward silence, the ball slightly elevated. It continued to elevate until the ball is exactly in front her face. I notice that her forehead is beaded with sweat even though she kept a cool expression. The ball stayed elevated for less than a minute before it settled back on the floor.

 "Wow,"

"Amazing,"

"We can do that?"

Murmurs fill the room as I watch our teacher wipe her forehead. She looks around us and when she saw that we are intrigued, she looks pleased.

"Now, suru is very hard to do, because you have to block out all the outside stimulus. Find your pull and the object's pull and make it work. Why don't you, young lady, give it a try?" I look around for the girl out teacher is referring to.

No one stood up. I look back at the teacher and see she was eyeing me and giving me an encouraging smile. As if I need it. Chesca elbows me then whispers.
