It's been a few days since mama and Kaneki found me in the field. Every time I eat, I get sick. Mama is getting worried. She says we will go to the doctor today, but first we are meeting someone.
We are sitting in a café and it smells really good! Mama and Kaneki are eating sandwiches but I refuse to eat. I hate getting sick and the food tastes nasty.
"Who are we waiting for?" I asked Ken.
"My aunt."
"Oh. Why?" I asked.
"Okasan always gives her money when she asks," he grumbled.
"Why?"
"Because she needs help. Quit asking so many questions." He said, biting into his sandwich.
"But.." I was cut off with his glare. I decided to continue talking about it later when he was in a better mood. I got the sense that he didn't really like his aunt.
"Faye, will you please eat something." Mama whispered. She held her sandwich out to me, prompting me to take a bite. "People are looking, and I don't want them getting the wrong idea."
I looked at her with a confused look. "What do you mean?"
"Just take a bite, please." She looked to the side. I noticed two guys wearing nice clothes. They were looking at me and whispering to themselves. "And don't spit it out. It might taste bad, but you have to swallow it."
I paused and looked at her. She looked scared. Why is she scared?
I took a big bite. I had to be brave for mama. It tasted horrible and mooshy, but I kept chewing it and eventually swallowed."You're right! It's good mama, but I'm still full from breakfast." I lied. She smiled and nodded, finishing it off. I looked back to the table with the two guys and they weren't paying any more attention to me.
They eventually got up and left. I took the opportunity to run to the bathroom. Mama was scared of those people; that much was clear. But why? I guess I'm too little to understand. I went and got sick in the toilet. I felt sad because I didn't have Ken to hold my hair and say nice things to distract me like he usually did.
I heard the door open. "Faye? Are you alright, sweety?" It was mama.
"No," I cried. I sniffled as I opened the door to the stall and went to the sink. Mama helped clean me up. I looked at her while she wiped my face with a cool cloth. "Why did I have to do that, mama?"
She stayed quiet.
"Why were you scared of those people? Why did you make me eat that sandwich when you knew I would get sick?" The questions kept coming as I started getting worked up; tears forming in my eyes.
"I don't know yet Faye," she whispered.
"Please keep your voice down."I couldn't calm down. I just kept crying; even when I heard the bathroom door open. "WHAT ARE YOU HIDING FROM ME, MAMA?!" I cried.
Mama gasped, as if she got scared. Uh-oh, I was being mean. That's not what ladies do. "I'm sorry mama. I didn't mean to yell." I whispered, looking down. She pulled me into a hug, picking me up before preparing to leave the bathroom. She sat me on the counter as she picked up the pieces of trash on the ground. "Just calm down. Ok?"
"Ok mama."
The lady at the door coughed, trying to get mama's attention, but she didn't hear her. The woman was staring at me. She was really pretty and had long black hair.
Why was she looking at me. I looked down at my fingers in the reflection of the mirror as she finally got mama's attention. I looked up at my face. My eyes changed?! The white part of my eyes were black now, and the blue part was now red. Is this what scared mama?
