- Scarlett’s POV –
I waited until it was nighttime again. Brian rarely visited me during the night, so I assumed that meant he slept. Hopefully, he was a deep sleeper, I thought, as I prepared to kick my door down.
I had saved my strength for this. I had ripped a leg off the wooden bed and I was preparing to ram the door with it. I didn’t know what kind of locking system the door used, but it wasn’t a new or up to date one, so I was willing to bet I could force it.
I threw myself at the door with the wooden post firmly between my hands. It shuddered, not giving much. I flinched at the noise. At this rate, I’d wake Brian up. Shit.
I rammed it again, feeling it give a little more. One more good shove and it would be done.
I threw all my strength into the last push, feeling the door fly open. Excellent. I kept my post – it was the only weapon I had – and closed the door again, making my way silently downstairs.
Brian had said that Jimmy was in the basement, so that was where I headed first. Once downstairs, it was easy enough to find. I just had to keep going down.
The door was securely locked, with a heavy chain on it, but in fiddling with it I found that the chain fell cleanly off. I pushed the door open as quietly as I could. Brian’s warnings of Jimmy being a monster rang in my ears, but I ignored them. I had to get this poor fucker out.
As soon as I was in the basement, something sprang at me and knocked me to the floor. I recognized Jimmy, Zacky’s best friend all through high school.
“Jimmy?” I choked out, “But you’re – why aren’t you dead?”
I had been knocked onto the ground and my head was feeling the pain. Dizzy, I pushed back the waves of darkness that threatened sleep. My hunger was making me lightheaded and being shoved the floor didn’t help.
“Why’d you push me, Jimmy?”
He glared at me, a very scary look in his eyes. He opened his mouth, and I saw – fangs. Huge ones. Panic engulfed me and I pushed myself away as best as I could. Jimmy followed me.
Saliva dripped from his fangs and I stared in pure terror. “Jimmy – I’ll help you out–”
He cut off my statement by leaning into my throat. I was confused at first, and even more confused when I felt a searing pain in the side.
Jimmy had bitten me.
“Jimmy–” I growled, “What the fuck are you–”
I felt blood leaving my system and sleep threatened again. What was Jimmy doing – biting me? Why? What the fuck?
The door was flung open with a bang and Jimmy turned his back to me, watching the door like a wild animal.
Brian stood in the door, livid. “Jimmy!” he roared, “Get off!”
Jimmy made a strange sound, then turned back to me. I used all my remaining strength to scoot away.
Brian picked up the post I’d dropped and hit Jimmy around the head with it – hard. Jimmy fell to the floor, knocked out. Brian rushed over to me.
“Scarlett,” he murmured, turning my face towards him, “Scarlett, no – don’t do this – Scarlett?”
My eyes closed and I gave in to the invading sleep.
