Pairings: Kagehina, Suga x Daichi
-----------------------------
Kageyama was acting strange. Well, stranger than usual, anyway. He'd yell at Hinata for minuscule reasons but sometimes completely overlook Hinata's biggest mess-ups. Actually, by that description, he sounds like his normal self. But the way he did the things that he normally would do weren't the same as how he was beginning to do them now. Maybe some examples are necessary.
~~
"Hey, Hinata!" Kageyama called over the carrot-topped shorter boy to where he was standing, in front of the vending machine.
"What's wrong? Do you need something?" Hinata asked, approaching him.
"Do you want one?" Kageyama held up a carton of milk. "The machine accidentally gave me two."
"Oh," Hinata said, taken by surprise. "Thank you." Kageyama merely nodded and drank his milk.
~~
"Hey, Kageyama," Hinata asked, rubbing his eyes tiredly after getting back late from a game. "Have you seen my pants?"
"Hinata!" Kageyama yelled. "Don't walk around with no pants on, you pervert!"
"Sorry, sorry! I can't find them; can you help me look for them?"
"Look for them yourself. Next time, you should keep track of what's yours." Kageyama stormed off to the bathroom, face red- with anger?
He didn't come back from the bathroom for a long time.
~~
"Hinata is acting way too hot-headed." Tsukkishima told his best friend (and possibly only friend,) Yamaguchi.
"Even I agree that he's being excessively enthusiastic." Tanaka added, coming in from out of nowhere and making the both of them jump.
"If Tanaka thinks so too, he really is being too hot-headed." Tsukki said.
They looked over to see Kageyama scruffing up Hinata's hair, Hinata laughing. They could hear Kageyama praising Hinata for being "high spirited."
"Kageyama is letting him do it. I don't understand at all." Tanaka whimpered.
~
"He's starting to remind me of Kageyama, and that's not good. Hinata is nothing like Kageyama." Sugawara said softly, but Daichi only smiled.
"That's not entirely true. They have at least two things in common."
"And what are they?" Suga asked.
"One, they both have an impressive dedication to volleyball." Daichi listed, and paused.
"What's the second?" Suga asked. Daichi leaned over to whisper it in his ear.
They're both in love with each other.
Suga's eyes grew wide and his mouth formed a little "o" of sudden understanding.
"That explains a lot. I never even thought about that." Suga murmured, and Daichi grinned.
"This could be really good for the team."
"But only if Hinata realizes what's going on. Otherwise, it might only hurt the team." Daichi considered this.
"That's true. I don't think we have reason to worry, though." They were interrupted by Hinata yelling at Kageyama before storming off to the locker room:
"You're being really weird! Stop it!"
"Actually, you know what? I got this, babe." Daichi kissed his boyfriend on the cheek and followed Hinata to the locker room.
"Hey, Hinata?" Daichi called out, and to his surprise, when Hinata looked up, there were tears in his eyes.
"Why are you crying?"
"I think Kageyama wants to put me on the bench." Hinata said sadly.
"What makes you say that?" Daichi asked, sitting down across from him on the benches.
"Well, he gave me a carton of milk the other day, and now he's acting all weird around me. I think he was trying to bribe me into getting better, and I'm not! I'm trying to, but I can't." Daichi bit back a laugh. That's what he thought what was going on?
"What? What's that look for?" Hinata asked.
"That's not why he's doing this."
"Then why?" Daichi grinned.
"He loves you." Hinata gave him a confused look.
"Why?"
"You want reasons?" Daichi asked. Hinata nodded earnestly.
"I think he's loved you ever since he first tossed to you. You've got natural talent, and on top of that, you desperately want to get better. You're a really nice guy, too. And he seemed very suspicious of backstabbing team members in the beginning, but then you proved yourself trustworthy by being there to spike the ball. He doesn't trust just anyone, you know." Hinata blushed at this.
"I think the biggest thing, though, is that you complement each other perfectly. You've got talent, he's got skill. And you bring out the best in each other. He brings out your confidence and pushes you to improve, and you bring out his team-player side. When he's around you, he's not as scary or as isolated. I think he appreciates that more than even we do." Daichi said, and Hinata watched him attentively.
"If you want more reasons, then you need to ask him. That's all I'm saying."
"But- but- Are you sure he feels that way?" Hinata asked doubtfully.
"Do you think he could?" Daichi answered his question with a question.
"I don't know, maybe?" Hinata said uncertainly.
"Yes or no? Which is it?" Daichi pressed.
"Uh, um... I don't know. Yes?"
"Then I'd say its a pretty good bet that he does. You know him better than I do. Go on. Talk to him." Hinata nodded, swallowing hard to solidify his resolve, and ran off. A few moments later, Sugawara came in and sat down next to him.
"How'd it go?" Daichi smiled.
"I think it went well. Hinata may be a bit of an idiot sometimes, but I made sure that he got the message this time."
"I'm glad." Suga said, leaning up to peck his boyfriend on the lips. Daichi merely cupped his cheek and kissed him back.
~
"K-Kageyama?" Hinata called out nervously. The black-haired met his eyes with a sarcastic glare.
"Can I talk to you in private?" Kageyama followed him to the gym's exit doors and closed them behind them. Unbeknownst to them, the rest of the team- even Tsukkishima, who claimed not to care about Kageyama and Hinata's business at all- had their ears to the doors, trying to eavesdrop. That is, until Tanaka had the brilliant idea to open the window, and then they all huddled by the window.
"What is it, Hinata?" Kageyama asked. "Am I doing something wrong?"
"No. Daichi-senpai explained it to me. I was just being a dumbass, is all." Hinata rushed forward and hugged Kageyama tightly. Kageyama, though shocked, hugged back. As they pulled apart, Hinata cupped Kageyama's cheek and inched his face closer until he could feel Kageyama's breath on his lips as he exhaled with surprise. Hesitatingly, Kageyama closed the distance and kissed Hinata. Kageyama's lips were surprisingly soft, despite being so chapped. They felt perfect, pressed against Hinata's.
"You were being an dumbass." Kageyama said, as they separated. "Why the hell would you put this off?" Hinata frowned.
"I didn't actively choose to not understand why you were acting weird. I just-"
"I know. Dumbass." Kageyama interrupted fondly, kissing him again before he could protest.
"Don't call me that! You're the one who was the dumbass! You could've just told me. Dumbass." Hinata argued.
"I know. You could've told me, too."
"Then we're both dumbasses?" Hinata asked.
"I guess so. Dumbasses in love." Kageyama chuckled before bringing their lips together once more.
Unbeknownst to them, every single member of the volleyball team- besides Suga and Daichi, who were merely laughing their asses off- were vomiting rainbows just beyond the gym doors.
