"So, we enrolled you into school already, it's halfway through your second grade year, right?" Mum asks, taking my plate, emptied of the yummy eggs and cinnamon toast I ate happily. I nodded, sipping my orange juice. "You're going to the same school as Aaron and Ariel, Aaron's in fifth grade, Ariel's in Pre-K. Willow Springs Elementary, funny how they don't have any willow trees on campus," she mused, scrubbing dirty breakfast plates in the kitchen sink. "It's just a name, honey," Dad said absently, reading the newspaper. Ariel was still eating, taking her time and licking the cinnamon sugar off her toast. Aaron rolled his eyes at her and smiled as he got up from the table. Wow. That was probably the last time I'd ever see him smile. Dad continued, "I know you just got home, and you're still settling in. So, if you feel uncomfortable going to school today, you can stay home and we'll figure out something to do for today." I finished off my juice and shook my head. "No, I'm okay with going to school today. I'm actually looking forward to it." And I was. American school was going to be so much different, I was pretty interested about my teacher and my new classmates. It would definitely be better than the orphanage school, it was so dull. "That's it, squirt! Taking one for the team!" Dad said, winking at me over his newspaper. "Make sure you get a supply list from your teacher then, Trevor. We want to get everything you need to fit in. Okay?" Mum said to me. I nodded graciously. "Thank you, Mum, I mean , Mom. Thank you, Dad." I looked down at my feet when I corrected myself, but I recieved a warm smile from both of them. "You're welcome, Trevor!" Ariel said around fluffy eggs. We laughed. "With that said, go ahead and get ready for school. Tell us if you need any help," Dad offered. I smiled and made a beeline to my room. I passed Aaron on the way, he was lying on the couch with the TV on, but not watching it. His eyes were closed. He disappeared from my sight before whisper yelling, "Suckup," to me as I walked past. My heart sunk a little hearing him. I was just genuinely trying to be nice. I kept thinking about it as I washed up and got dressed for school.
I felt slightly naked, without any knapsack to carry. I supposed I would get one soon, maybe one of my own choosing. I'd picked out my clothes, to resemble my mood for the day. A bright blue, I was a little sad that Aaron was still on my case, but I was still feeling positive. We were riding in the car, cruising down the street. Ariel was chatting to me about her teacher and her "bestest best friend in the world," Lilly, and Aaron was pointedly ignoring me, with his headphones blasting anything I might've said to him away. I listened quietly to her, nodding as she went on. Mum in the front seat sipped her coffee, and Dad drove in his robotic way. I thought of my train track randomly, playing with it had been so fun this morning.
The two story school stood proudly with an American flag waving. Dad parked in the lot, nabbing the last spot. Cars honked at him, and I saw a flash of a smug smile on his face. Mom rolled her eyes, and announced cheerfully, "We're here!" Ariel grabbed her Tweety Bird backpack and smiled widely at me. I straightened her crooked headband and patted her head. Aaron stuffed his Ipod and headphones in his pocket and muttered, "All we're missing is a fanfare." We got out of the car, and I got a better look around. The lawn was trimmed and vibrant and the flow of milling students inside was pretty welcoming. "Come on, squirt. Let's go, you two." Dad pushed all three of us forward with Mom trailing behind. She held a digital camera that seemingly appeared out of thin air, and snapped photos as we went along. I asked, "Why aren't you making us stop to pose?" She took another, and replied, "If I make you guys stand up straight and say cheese you wouldn't Usually, people would make me smile for pictures, I wouldn't because they'd make me" i nod understanding what my new mum meant. As we walk into the large school i see so many bright new faces my dad and mum walk me into the office as Ariel and Aaron run off to there friends, i smile up at my father and wrap my hand with my mums. Her hands are so soft. When we reach the office the lady smiles at me "Ah you must be Trevor, may i show you to mrs.Kayfeilds class?" i nod at excited to start my new school "That would be lovely" she smiles as another lady comes up to my parents. i look at my parents and smile "see you after school" they both smile but mum gives me a worried look "Trevor if you need anything just come to the office dad or i will be her in a moment" i smile "Thanks" mum and dad both look at me "Have a good day buddy" they say unison. i smile widely as the lady is walking me to class "Are you nervous for your first day Trevor" i look up at the lady "No ma'am im actually quiet excited, i have always fantasied about going to an American school, with boys and girls:" she smiles, "i think you will really like it here Mrs. Kayfeild is my personal favorite teacher at this school" i look up excitedly "Well then it will be my pleasure to be here" she smiles down as she opens the door. i look around the class and see many boys and girls doing a worksheet with slim smiles on they're faces. Who i assume is Mrs.Kayfeild looks over at the door with a welcoming smile "Well hello there sir what is your name" she says walking toward me "Hello, i am Trevor Carl----i mean i am Trevor Blides" she smiles "it is very nice meeting you" i look up at her deep chocolate brown eyes and soft rosey cheeks "The pleasure is all mine Mrs.Kayfeild" she laughs "What a gentlemen you are" i smile at her as she turns to the class "Everyone please put down you're pencils" once she has the classes attention she smiles warmly "Today we have a new student, His name is Trevor Blides, i expect you all to make him feel welcome and help him out today" the class all smiles back poliety "Yes mrs.Kayfeild" she smiles back "Okay so who would like to be Trevors partner for the day?" a redheaded boys hand shoots up, he is one of the few kids without a partner at his desk Mrs.Kayfeild smiles "Thank you Dylan" she then looks back and me and points me to my desk "Thank you" as im walking away i remember i need a supply list so i turn around, her nose shrivels in confusion "Everything okay Trevor" i look at her "Oh yes ma'am i just need a supply list please" she smiles "Of course, just take your seat and i will get that for you momentarily"
As the days goes on i really like this school my new friend Dylan seems really nice, he is eight and has two dads. I thought this was very strange and took note to ask my parents about it later. But for the time being he was very helpful, When we switched to doing spelling me cursed small bladder was full and i needed to use the restroom. He was very nice and showed me where it was. He seemed to be a very nice kid. When we got back to Class Mrs.Kayfeild had us play a game called around the world when she got to she would give you a word to spell and if you spelled it correctly you keep standing, but if you didnt get it correct you had to sit down. She told me i didnt have to play since i just got here and didnt know the words yet, but i wanted to. Back in england i was one of the top spellers in my class. When it got to my word she had me spell "Dairy" it took me a moment but i know i could spell it "D-A-I-R-Y" she smiled very well. Once the game was close to ending only I and another girl were standing she smiled "Okay Amanda spell Purple" Amanda smiled "P-u-r-p-e-l" mrs. Kayfeild frowned slightly "very good try Amanda but that isn't correct sweetie" she smiled at me "okay Trevor if you can spell purple correctly you get 5 get to go first next monday for show and tell" i smile "p-u-r-p-l-e" she smiles very good job. Once we are finished with our game the bell rings and mrs.Kayfeid lines us up. When we are walking out i am unsure of where we are going. Once i see the playground my eyes light up "We get to play outside?" i ask the boy in front of me he roles his eyes "Duh its recess" i smile excitedly once mrs.Kayfeild stops everyone runs off into different directions to go play. i look up at her and smile "You okay there bud" i look at her "oh yes just taking it all in" she smiles "go have fun!" i smile and run to the swings.
