It was one of those nights. When you just feel calm, when you just want to lay in the grass and look at the stars. So that's what I did. Except that there are no fields in San Fransokyo. Siting on my doorstep will have to do.
I stared at the clear, black sky, dotted with starlight and filled with the glow of a full moon. It was so calm, and the noisy city seemed less present.
People walked past me now and then, until one didn't. I looked down to the person casting the unmoving shadow.
"Tadashi." I smiled. He stands there, his school bag over one shoulder and his SFIT baseball hat resting on his head. He wears jeans and a sweater. Which I'm just now realizing was a good idea.
"Hey, (y/n)," he grinned back at me. Tadashi. He was- is a really good friend of mine. I'd consider him my best friend, but I don't think he feels the same way. I've met his other friends at SFIT, and they're pretty great. They've all got fantastic minds and personalities (yes including Fred) and I'm only me. He's just too kind, and funny, and intelligent... Oh no, let's not go there.
I move to the side, gesturing for him to sit down next to me. He swings his bag down in front of us and sits beside me with one movement.
"What are you doing out so late?" I ask him.
"Doing some more work on my robotics project." Tadashi smirks. "I'm proud of it so far, just need to get it to work."
"So when can I see it?" I ask, poking him with my elbow.
"Soon... I hope." He looks at my bare arms with concern. "Aren't you cold? Here." He takes his sweater off.
"No it's fine I can just go inside and-" but he cuts me off.
"It's okay, (y/n)." He places it around my shoulders while smiling sweetly.
"Thank you." I look at his face, into his deep brown eyes under the stars. I can never be as special as he is.
"Hey, Tadashi."
"Hey, (y/n)." He imitates me.
"Do you ever just look at the sky at night, and it just feels like nothing is happening? But in a good way."
"Sometimes," he answers. "But I like it when I'm doing something, you know? I want to help people and have a good life that I'm proud of, live in the moment." He stopped suddenly.
"What's so bad about living in the moment?" I ask, referring to his sudden silence. Right then I wanted to lean into him. I wanted to rest my head on his shoulder. So I did.
A minute passed without a response. Just when I thought Tadashi was uncomfortable and I was about to pick my head up, he spoke.
"(Y/n)"
"Yes." I answered. I pick my head up from his broad shoulders slightly.
Tadashi's hand rests on my cheek, subtly pulling me closer to him. His lips touch mine softly in a small kiss. He looks back into my (e/c) eyes, his hand gently playing with my (h/c) hair.
"Nothing is wrong with that. It took me too long to stop just saying it and start believing."
We spent the next half hour gazing at the moon and the stars. I rested my head against him, and he put his arm around me, holding my hand. I could have fallen asleep that way, wrapped up in his sweater and his arms. And we did.
