City lights shining bright above us, we step onto the street. We walk for a minute towards Fred's house, but then I stop. I need to talk to him, but I don't know what to say.
"Did I do something wrong?" He looks startled.
"No. Why?"
Looking into the tall boy's eyes, I can't collect my thoughts. Instead they just pour out of my mouth.
"I feel like I haven't talked to you in forever. I know it's only been a month, but I miss it. We text all the time, but it's not the same. I want to hear your voice again. I miss being able to tell you anything and you'd make me feel better. I miss when you'd have me come over just to tell me what was on your mind. I miss the stupid things you say that always make me smile. Then I'd have this stupid grin on my face and get embarrassed when I laughed for too long, but you laughed with me, and it was okay. I miss being able to make you smile back. We were as close as two people could be. Nothing could come between us but now- now I don't know. I feel like I hurt you, or someone did, and I can't stand that because, yeah, we're best friends but I'm in love with you-"
I'm shocked at my own words, even though I realize now that it's true. Way to go, I think. While trying to win back my best friend, I confess my love for him. That's not weird.
I can feel my cheeks heating up and look down, barely able to look Fred in the eye.
"I-I'm really sorry. I'll just-I'll go now." I stutter. I start to turn away. "I didn't mean to-" I feel his hand lightly touching my arm.
"(Y/N), wait." I turn back and before I even know what's happening, Fred leans down, pressing his lips softly to mine in a long kiss that melts my nerves. I close my eyes and he kisses me again, putting one of his hands lightly to my cheek, his fingers brushing back my hair.
I raise my hand to hold his. We intertwine our fingers and I open my eyes slowly.
"I'm in love with you too, (Y/N). I knew almost a month ago, and ever since then I would only make a fool out of myself around you. I couldn't think straight, so I stopped talking at all."
"Well I missed you. Don't ever do that again." I tease, then pop up onto my toes to kiss him quickly. A big, dorky smile spreads across his face, and I smile back at him. He glances toward the direction we came from.
"Should we go back and tell them they were right?" Fred asks.
"No way!"
"We have to at some point."
"Fred, what is the one thing that every good comic book knows how to use well?"
"Capes?"
"That too, but I was thinking about something else." A mischievous smile comes across his face.
"The element of surprise."
