I stare at my pencil as I tap it lightly on my physics notebook. Class should be over any minute now, then we can all go home for the weekend. The professor already stopped her lecture, which is great because I can't focus.
I stare at my notebook, lost in thought, then let out a small sigh. I was proud of myself for not doodling much during classes, but today Hiro's name had been written in different styles on my notes. I could never tell him. Another sigh.
The bell rings, and my mind stops wandering off. I quickly put my notebook and pens in my bag.
Walking down the front steps of SFIT, I hear my best friend's voice yelling my name from behind me.
"Hey (y/n)!" I stop and turn around, backtracking my steps to meet him.
"Hi Hiro, what's up?"
"Gummy bears?" He offers me an unopened bag as he snacks on his half empty one. I smile and accept the bag, happy that he thought of me.
"Sure. Thanks." We continue walking down the steps together, both of us snacking on gummy bears.
"Are we still going to my place to work on that robotics project?"
"Of course!" I nudge him with my elbow playfully, "like I could ever find someone cooler to hang out with."
I look over to see him trying to hide his blushing face. Aw that's so cute.
Once we're at Hiro's secret lair, we pull up the computer program and start brainstorming ideas.
I'll admit that I got distracted a few times. I can't tell him I like him. I'm not brave enough and it could ruin our friendship. He might act all awkward around me, I don't want to mess up what we have.
On the other hand, if he liked me too he might not say anything. Then we'd be stuck in this cycle of neither of us saying anything. I mean, he's my best friend, I can tell him anything right? We're both mature enough to-
"(Y/n)?" Hiro looks at me, trying to get my attention.
"Oh sorry. Um yeah I think we could pretty easily incorporate hydraulics."
He doesn't seem satisfied with my answer. He rolls his chair to face me.
"What's wrong? You seem a bit different today."
"Nothing." I say a bit unconvincingly. I try again, "I'm fine," but he must not believe me, because he just leans closer.
"Really, it's nothing." I repeat, but he leans closer still. Our faces are only a few inches apart now, our eyes are locked on each other's. I give out a short, breathy laugh.
"I don't think you would dare come closer."
"Oh really?" He says with a smirk.
"Hiro Hamada, I'm fine-" just then, he places his hand underneath my chin, gently holding my face upward to him. Quickly, he brings his lips to mine for a slow kiss. The pure shock has left me paralyzed for a moment.
Not-so-gracefully, I blurt out "I like you," louder than I had anticipated.
"I know you're a genius and all, but in case you didn't notice, I like you too."
I roll my eyes at him and can't help but laugh.
"You're cute, Hamada." I smile as I give him a quick kiss and roll my chair backwards. "So hydraulics."
