The next morning Charlotte awoke to the movement of another human being standing over her. She looked up at him sleepily and he smiled. She was relieved, clearly whatever issues had plagued him last night had been resolved.
He slipped a pacifier into her mouth, which she accepted with some hesitation. Her body responded by flooding her stomach with warmth.
"That's it," he said, stroking her hair back gently, "I knew you would like that."
He bent down to kiss her forehead, and she surprised him by pressing the pacifier against his cheek through her lips in a kiss. He laughed.
"Is little Charlotte trying to show her appreciation?" he asked, amused. She smiled and blushed. "Now, now, that's nothing to be ashamed of. I have to leave the house for a little while, so I'd like for you to go back to sleep - it's still very early - and then when you've woken up you may play in your room until I get back. Is that alright?"
Charlotte nodded, and snuggled deeper into the mattress.
He gave her a kiss on the cheek and left, closing the door behind him.
Charlotte closed her eyes again, sucking comfortingly on her newly found pacifier.
