He sat down on the edge of the mattress and lifted her into his lap, where she curled up against his chest. He stroked her gently for a long time, feeling her body begin to relax in his arms. Eventually the sobs grew softer, until silence filled the big, warm room.
"That feels a lot better, doesn't it, Charlotte?" he asked. Charlotte nodded in response, eyes closed, a picture of tranquility. "There, there, you know Daddy would never hurt you anymore than necessary." he whispered softly, rubbing her shoulder. Charlotte slowly began to drift asleep, her previously rugged thoughts having dispersed, leaving her empty-headed and calm, and her breathing quiet and steady.
It was still early in the evening, and so he decided to allow Charlotte to nap. He pulled the covers down and let her snuggle up to her pillow before draping them over her exhausted shape. Quietly, he went into the bathroom to fill up her glass of water and set it on the bedside table. By the time he returned Charlotte was already fast asleep, lying on her side, hair draped over her right shoulder. He brought some chocolate from the kitchen and placed it next to the glass on the table before leaving to go into his office, feeling utterly cleansed for the first time in many weeks. He took one last look at the small figure nestled amongst the bed sheets and closed the door, smiling.
He went down into his study to finish some work that needed to be ready the following week, and eased himself into the leather armchair with a cup of coffee in hand.
