He had worked for a few hours until well after midnight, when he had gone to bed following a hot shower. He had not heard from Charlotte and assumed she would be sleeping through the night until morning. It had been an eventful few days for her. He closed his eyes and slowly eased himself into sleep.

A little while later he was awakened by a muffled scream in the dark. His eyes fluttered open briefly but fell shut again almost immediately as he assumed the noise had been created by nothing more than a figment of his imagination. This assumption was, however, quickly swept away by the soft sound of crying seeping in through the wall.

His eyebrows furrowed as he once again opened his eyes and wondered what had Charlotte so upset. Naturally he'd had it coming; moving away from everything you had once known, and taking on a new lifestyle did not come easily to anyone who was not habituated to these types of changes. He lay awake looking up at the ceiling, feeling it was best to let her cry it out by herself. Making sure she was able to come to terms with her situation was heavily dependent on her personal mindset and the shaping of her reflections on her time here, his comfort would likely do little more than prolong this unstable state.

As his thoughts wandered on into a more precise evaluation of Charlotte's disposition he became aware that a door clicked open in the hallway, quickly followed by the sound of small steps coming slowly closer. They came to a halt at the door, and for a long time he heard nothing as he waited patiently, curious to see what her plan of action was to be.

A tentative knock came on the door.

"Come in," he called, turning on the bedside lamp and sitting up.

Slowly the bedroom door began to open. He could just make out Charlotte's little silhouette in the dark frame of the hallway, peeking into his room.

"Come here, Charlotte, and please close the door behind you."

Charlotte did as she was asked, and came awkwardly toward the bed.

"Sit down," he said, beckoning her for her to sit down at the edge of the bed beside him. "Tell Daddy what's keeping his little girl up."

"I'm sorry to wake you up," Charlotte told him, embarrassed. "I had a terrible nightmare, and I was afraid to be alone in case it comes back."

He drew her into his arms, stroking her tummy soothingly. "It's over now, Charlotte. Everything is alright, it was just a dream." he said reassuringly. "Why don't you sleep in my bed tonight, and I'll make sure we don't have any more surprise nightmares?" he suggested. Making a little space for Charlotte to clamber into bed beside him, she nuzzled against him, basking in the warmth of the bed and feeling herself relax.

"There we go, put your little head on my chest and let me read you a little story, so it's easier for you to fall back asleep." he said, reaching for an edition of Poe classics, that was lying beside his bed.
