Downstairs he pulled out a chair for her and pushed the bowl of porridge towards her. He sat down in front of her with some coffee.

"What's the surprise?" Charlotte asked eagerly, looking at him with an expression of childlike curiosity. He reached for her bowl and dipped a spoon into the porridge.

"Blow," he said, gesturing towards the spoonful from which wisps of steam were still rising. Charlotte obliged and he slipped the spoon into her mouth. Charlotte averted her gaze, as always when he fed her anything. He put the spoon down.

"I know that we discussed your love for animals at great length, before your arrival here," he said, leaning back into the chair and taking a sip of coffee, as Charlotte straightened up and placed her hands in her lap. "I've been thinking a little, and I've come to the conclusion that it might be nice for you to adopt a cat. If you want to, that is."

Charlotte's eyes widened. "A cat?"

"A cat. Not a kitten, but a grown cat from the local shelter."

"This is so unexpected!"

"I know. And I've given the introduction of a cat into this household a fair amount of thought since you first mentioned it. I think that it will give you just the right kind and amount of responsibility, and that it will function as a friend, that will always be around, even when I am not here."

Charlotte's eyebrows furrowed at this. "Why would you not be here?" she asked, feeling uncertain. "Are you planning on going away for a while?" her voice sounded stressed.

He smiled. "Come here," he said, beckoning her onto his lap. Charlotte got up and sat down on his knees, making herself small and cuddling up against his chest. "I will never leave you, Charlotte. How could I? I'm simply referring to the short periods during which I may be in the office, or running other errands - for which you will of course be accompanying me, once you get a little bigger."

"I will never leave you." Charlotte announced in response, sitting up to look at him.

"I'm glad we settled that, then." he replied, laughing. "So, this cat. Shall we discuss it? Do you want one? Will you still want it in a few months?"

"Yes!" Charlotte squeaked enthusiastically, snuggling back against his chest.

"So, if you like we can take a look at the cats being held for adoption at the shelter, and you can choose one. I know that you believe that cats should not be kept on their own, but I think - for the time being - it is wiser to see how you manage with one cat. We can always get a second one in a few months, if necessary." Charlotte nodded, putting her arms around his neck. "We will need to order all of the necessary supplies and find a good vet, to make sure he or she stays just as healthy as my little girl." he kissed her forehead and Charlotte giggled. She was happy.

He pulled the bowl of porridge over to his side of the table, and continued to spoon feed the contents to Charlotte, who was far too excited to focus on eating, going into great detail regarding the necessary steps to be taken in preparation for such an adoption.
