The next morning Charlotte awoke to the sound of curtains being pulled back and her room was flooded with daylight. She rubbed her eyes.
He pulled open the drawer of her bedside table and pulled out her pacifier, holding it against her lips until Charlotte - somewhat reluctantly - opened her mouth and let it slip in. The warmth that always accompanied the comfort of sucking spread through her stomach.
"See, you love it every time I do that, Charlotte, you need to stop fighting it or I will take it away from you until you learn to appreciate it."
Charlotte looked stung, this was the first time he had admonished her in any way. Her eyes betrayed the effect this comment had on her, and he felt reassured of Charlotte's pressing need to feel accepted and appreciated.
"There, there" he stroked her head and placed his hand under her chin to turn her face towards his. "It's alright." He scooped her up in his arms and held her for a while, kissing her forehead while Charlotte sucked on her pacifier and began to relax.
He carried her downstairs and into the kitchen, placing her on a chair at the table before busying himself with the preparation of her breakfast. Charlotte's feet were cold on the kitchen floor and so she sat cross-legged on the wooden chair, watching him fill another Winnie the Pooh bowl with a mix of porridge.
He fed her, spoonful for spoonful, while informing her of the day's schedule. "How long will you be gone for?" she asked.
"Not long, Charlotte, I'll be back before you know it."
"What if something goes wrong?"
"Nothing can go wrong, my sweet little angel, you're safe here." He took her hand and stroked it.
