Someone puts a hand on my shoulder, pulling me away, firm but gentle. I shrug it off because for all I know, if I leave, they'll unplug her. The hand comes back, I realize it's the doctor, and pulls more insistently and someone yells, piercing the cloud of grief.
"-ove out of the way Four!" It's Christina. "She needs the doctor to-"
The rest of it fades again as I register the machine to my left. It's a the heart monitor and something is up.
I move out of the way quickly and the doctor starts working. He adjusts monitors and takes out some tubes and puts in different ones. I don't realize he is speaking until he is finishing his thought.
"What?" I say.
"She's breathing on her own and controlling her heart again!" Christina replies sounding equally shaken with relief and exasperated.
I can't see the rest of what the doctor does because I've sat down on the floor, trembling with relief. I surprise myself and laugh as a way to release the strange sensation the news has brought me.
