-Day 5-
Void. Beneath me and around me and everywhere there is nothing but air filling the void. Well, not exactly beneath me since I'm not yet part of this everlasting void but alive and currently standing on the very edge of an enormous cliff. Ben and I made it. We actually made it! We searched for a good location and planned everything and packed and went grocery shopping and got into the car of Ben's Mom and now we're here.
It's not exactly the way I imagined it to be but my imagination always goes a little crazy and becomes unrealistic so this whole thing here is still almost too beautiful to be described. I took two of my old cameras with me and three rolls of film so I'm going to try to capture as much as I can, but I guess words are also a good way to paint pictures.
The sky above our heads is of a dark blue, the grass seems greener up here and it is so good to finally feel the sun and the wind on my face again, the feeling of pure freedom. At the moment, I'm up here on the edge of the cliff and Ben is hopefully setting up our camp, preparing the tent and the food for the evening. I wish I could just take a few steps back, run as fast as I can and jump straight off the cliff into the void and then fall fall fall directly into the sea. Sadly, my body would most likely not survive the fall and the landing so I must stay here, above it all and be happy with what we have. "Art, could you please for once stop daydreaming and help me with this goddamn tent?", that was Ben, calling me from far away and sounding pretty annoyed. I inhale the salty air one last time and then start to run towards our small camp, where Ben is struggling with a something that vaguely reminds me of a tent. "Where are the instructions?", I ask and look around, but everything's been thrown onto the ground in a wild chaos. "We don't have any, you genius! Setting up a tent is supposed to be easy and quick and since we're men, we should be able to succeed, don't you think?", Ben's hair is all tousled from the wind and he shoots me an angry glare from beneath his rimmed glasses. I quickly nod and try my best to help him.
In the end, there is a wobbly tent standing next to our car and a bonfire warming our hands. Setting up the tent and organizing our sleepingbags took us about two and a half hours so by now, the sun's long gone and there is nothing but black and thousands of stars surrounding us. Ben is staring deep into the flames, his fingers wrapped around a mug of tea and is telling me the story of how he met the most fascinating girl during the summer. Apparently, she is the daughter of a friend of Ben's father and by accident, the two families both decided to spend their summer on a small Greek island where they met at the beach. By now, Ben hasn't seen his girl called Evie since two weeks and he seems pretty upset about it. "Well, where does she live?", I ask, trying my best to cheer him up a bit. "About three or maybe four hours away from here, so it's a seven hour drive from my house to hers", Ben replies quietly. I nod and mumble a few sympathetic sentences, already planning out the details of my idea. I call it: Ben And Evies Reunification. But I don't tell Ben yet, I just decide that I'm going to call Evie some way or another in the next few days and to keep it a secret from him as long as I can.
A few hours later we lay outside next to the sad remains of the bonfire in our sleepingbags that we dragged out of the tent and into the open because we wanted to be able to see the stars while falling asleep. So far, this has been the best day I've ever had. Not because we did some seriously great things, but because it's been a damn long time since I last felt so free and happy. There still is a part of the usual numbness in me, hidden somewhere I don't even want to think of, but for now, it's repressed by the moment, by the freedom flooding my veins and my mind and my heart.
