Chapter Ten
He stepped inside the house as quietly as possible, not that it mattered, his mother had hearing like a wax moth. He was almost positive he still smelt of Vance's cologne so he really didn't know what he was dong trying to hide from his mother. He wanted to tell her the truth, he wanted her to know things about him and be able to share with her but he wasn't sure.
"Where have you been?" Her voice came from the kitchen she seemed annoyed.
"I was with a really good friend." Cyro sighed walking toward the kitchen, he leaned on the doorway watching as she scrubbed at dishes, washing them in the sink. She'd always preferred to do things the old fashion way. "Mom, I want to tell you about this relationship."
"Why would you want to tell me about a relationship?" She frowned then sneered slightly as she scrubbed harder at the dish in her hands.
"Mom, I'm sleeping with a man he says he loves me and maybe I love him back, I don't think so." Cyro sighed looking down at his feet shifting nervously before looking back at his mother. She had a plate in a death grip her whole body shaking as she tried to hold back her tears. He waited for her to compose herself but he simply stood there, refusing to look at him or speak to him. "Mom, say something."
"I will nether encourage nor reject you, I am your mother, that is my cross and that is your sin."
"Yes, mom, I understand."
"Go pray." She went back to her dishes then, not saying anything else. He wasn't sure what to pray for, it was obvious she wasn't going to tell him either.
He made his way to his room looking around it for a place to pray. It had been so long, he wasn't sure he even remembered how to anymore, but he knelt by his bed his head dropping down and he began to mumble off what he could remember still unsure what he was asking for.

Vance dropped his head back as he looked at the house, angrily putting his car into park he pulled off his sunglasses throwing them on the passenger seat as he got out the car. He walked up to the house door scanning the neighborhood, the whole scene made him sick, he was only here because he needed to be. He hated every time he had to come to this house. He paused at the door before sighing and knocking on the door, he could hear soft voices inside the house.
"Oh my, hello Vance." The door opened quickly, and she stood there just smiling at him. Her hair was braided in red and black micro braids, her brown eyes seemed slightly surprised to see him as she plucked at her sweatshirt.
"Clearly you weren't expecting me." Vance grumbled pushing past her not caring when he shouldered her slightly. "Where's Maxine?"
"She's probably upstairs playing, I suppose."
"Probably?" Vance asked looking at the woman she was still plucking at her sweatshirt. "No one cares how you look Renee, where's Maxine."
Her hand dropped from her shirt then, she looked at him her mouth opened slightly her eyes rolling up towards the ceiling as she tried to think of where the little girl was. He could feel himself getting angrier by the second this woman made him want to murder people, yet this was the person who had legal custody of his daughter. She was an awful mother but she was a mother so she the state felt that was good enough.
"Upstairs?"
"For fucks sake." Vance gritted his teeth turning to go upstairs and search for the child himself but Renee grabbed his arm signaling for him not to. He looked back at her scrunching his eyebrows as he shook her hand off. "What?"
"Can we talk about this boy?"
"No." Vance answered immediately, her eyes dropped down to the carpet as she began plucking at her shirt yet again.
"If you weren't like this you could have Maxine back you know, we can get you some help." Vance frowned slightly placing his hand on her head. "I want to give her back too Vance, please."
"I'm trying to work with this but I can't, they still think I'm suicidal."
"Are you?" Renee asked hope filling her voice as Vance tucked a stray braid behind her ear. He hated when she did that, he knew it was his fault he didn't have his daughter her constantly begging him to take her back was aggravating. He would take her if he could but he couldn't.
"Yes." He replied honestly moving away to go upstairs he easily found Maxine's room. She sat on her bed, markers splayed out around her, the orange one gripped gently in her hand as she colored carefully inside the lines of her coloring book. She was caramel skinned like her mother, Renee, but she had his green eyes. Her black hair was pulled into a ponytail her curly hair sticking out at places but she didn't seem to mind.
"I'm coloring a clown fish." She mumbled not looking up from her coloring page, Vance smiled moving closer to look over hr shoulder.
"It's very impressive." Vance complimented, looking at the picture carefully, she'd taken a picture of a plain fish and colored it the right colors for a clown fish. "When did you learn about clown fish?"
"Yesterday, Ms.Earnst said she'd take us to the aquarium next week to see some she need chaperons though." Maxine looked up from her picture for a moment to point a marker at a piece of paper on her dresser. "Sign up."
It wasn't a question or even up for discussion, Maxine had made up her mind, he hated to disappointing her when she was so determined with things like this. He looked at the paper wondering if Maxine would forgive him if he backed out of another event.
