They tried to give me breakfast and a pat on the back saying it would all be okay, but I knew it was a show. The NYPD got cases like this all the time I'm sure; hopeless teens with no one, and nothing to do but stick them in a foster house full of other teens that had the same thing happen to them. I never thought something like this would happen to me, not after the first time something unthinkable happened. But that time I had Stella. Now I have no one.
I just wanted to go home.
"Can I go back to the apartment and get some stuff?" I asked the officer and he handed me a paper cup of coffee from a café down the street. He had sent his intern to get it.
"Sure, but you'll have to be accompanied by an officer," He said while he walked to his office door," Lila? I need you to do something for me!" He called down the hall.
A woman with short blonde hair and green eyes appeared in the doorway,"Yes sir?"
"Take Miss Moore here, back to her apartment so she can freshen up. I have some calls to make." He ordered her and I wondered who he was calling. Probably some foster care house.
The woman sent a sympathetic look in my direction as she pieced things together. With a sigh, she motioned for me to walk outside the door," C'mon kid."
I reluctantly followed her to a police car and sat in the front next to her. My knees touched the console in front of me, but at least I'd be out of here soon enough. I had a plan.
We got to the apartment building quickly and she led me through the lobby to the stairs. They had cleaned the place up from the hassle inside; it looked nothing like it did when I ran in there last night. It was almost like it didn't happen- I wish it never happened.
"Make it quick." Lila told me when we got to the door of Stella and I's apartment.
"Sure." I said sourly. I thought she'd at least show some type of emotion towards me since she gave me that look back at the station. I guessed not.
Before I disappeared into my room I saw her sit down at the table. Perfect, I could get out before she caught me I thought. But first I was going to get clean. I grabbed a clean pair of jeans and my favorite long sleeved shirt before I stepped down the hall to the shower.
After a quick scrub down, I traveled back to my room to pull on a pair of thick socks, my boots, a scarf, gloves, hat, and my coat before packing a bag full of clothes and some money. At the last minute I shoved the ninja star inside a small pocket of the bag and a picture of my family, along with my nice size pocket knife. Then, I snuck down the hallway, remaining silent as I saw her still at the table playing on her phone.
Okay Abby, I told myself, You can do this. The door is just past her and if you get down the stairs before she does you're home free. You got this.
With that in mind, I started walking slowly by the kitchen behind the officer. I wasn't making a sound until the floor creaked under my boot. I cringed but watched as she turned her body around in the chair. Not giving her a chance to speak, I darted across the room, flying towards the door while she shouted my name.
I forced myself to keep running, adrenaline rushing through my veins by the time I started down the first flight of stairs. The only problem I had was she was a trained officer, so I knew she could probably run faster than me. Maybe I could lose her once I got to the crowded streets. If I even got that far to begin with. My legs moved as fast as they could down the stairs but by the time I got to the third flight going down, I could hear feet pounding only a set of stairs above me.
After I heard that, I started taking two steps at a time and jumping to the bottom of the steps when I got close enough to the end of them. I was determined to get away. That, and I was too scared to find out what would happen if she caught me. Trouble wouldn't even begin to describe what would happen if she did.
"Stop!" She shouted not to far behind me and I felt her hand graze the back of my coat. My heart raced at how close she was, but I pushed myself to run faster when I got to the last step before the lobby.
"I'm sorry!" I called over my shoulder and began to throw the fake plants down as I ran by, trying to create a diversion to slow her down. With a chair thrown down, I heard her hit the ground with a thud. Yelling another apology, I darted past the old man at the desk and to the door.
"Good luck, Abigail!" He shouted after me when I yanked the old door open. I didn't turn around, but I stuck my hand up in the air to give him a sign that I heard him. I was saying goodbye- at least- goodbye for just a while. I'd be back. And I'd have Stella by my side again.
Frustrated and confusing tears clouded my vision as I weaved through the crowded streets of New York City, alone with nothing but a picture to hold all my love.
