Instead, a heavy body collided with mine and we were sent tumbling to the side of the alley while the van sped past us. An arm was around my waist as the stranger pulled me on top of him so I didn't hit the ground. His chest was hard, really really hard, and it felt weird, but I wasn't thinking about that long. I pushed myself away from the stranger, running to the street frantically.
"Stella, No!" I cried, sinking to the ground in front of the alley," No, no, no." I began to sob like a little baby when the black van turned at the end of the street.
"A thank you would've been nice," A grouchy voice said from behind me and a hand placed on my shoulder. I flinched away from the hard touch, turning around on the ground still on my knees. I sniffled as more tears fell down my cheeks, and I heard a groan from the man standing above me.
"Look kid... don't cry," He said," I know I might look... weird to you, but I'm one of tha good guys- honest."
What? I looked up at my savior with curious eyes, and caught sight of green. A lot of green.
"it's one of those green freaks!..." The man had yelled that; I didn't understand him until now. I was on my knees, shaking, crying, and freezing with a giant talking turtle standing over me wearing protective gear and had two three spiked weapons in his belt.
Oh my god.
"You're- you're a turtle?" I squeaked out, wiping my tears as everything was pushed back because of the shock of what I was seeing right now.
"Well, I'm not Prince Charming if that's what you were expecting, sweetheart." A three fingered hand stuck in front of my face for me to grab. There's a giant talking turtle in New York City. Oh my god. The thought could not get through my head. Where did he come from? How is he here?
"I don't bite, kid," He scoffed, snapping me out of my trance.
"I... s-sorry..." I stuttered and finally placed my small hand in his large green one. His touch was warm to my freezing one. How was he so warm? If he was a turtle then he was cold blooded, so he should've been an ice cube in this weather.
I didn't have time to think anymore before I was pulled onto my feet and steadied by two hands on my shoulders. I had to look up at him; he was a good foot taller than me and that made him look even more intimidating to me. He just saved me from being kidnapped, so I didn't think he'd hurt me, right? But why should I trust a stranger? Especially a talking turtle that had a red mask and weapons.
"What do the Purple Dragons want with you anyway?" He questioned as he let go of my shoulder. Everything came rushing back to me then and I teared up once again.
"N-nothing. Or that's what I think. They took my sis-sister." I pushed the palms of my hands onto my eyes to keep the tears from being visible. My lips shook and my knees were weak. I felt torn.
"Crud, don't cry, just..." The turtle trailed off like he didn't know what to do. Who would?
"What's your name?" He asked instead. My hands removed themselves from my face as my gaze drifted to my boots.
"A-Abby." I sniffled.
"Okay, look, Abby... I'll- I'll try to get your sis back, but you gotta get somewhere safe first." He put one hand on his hip while the other one came up to rub at his forehead. He looked regretful. Must not be used to helping people, I thought to myself.
"Really? But I... What do I do?" I wrapped my arms around myself, gripping my elbows. My eyes locked on my feet as I thought of the things that would happen in the future. Where would I go? Would I get Stella back? Will I go to a new home? A new family? I didn't want a new family. I wanted Stella.
"Go to the police and they'll take care of ya, kid." Was all he said while his hands touched my back as he turned me around to face the street. I could hear the police sirens in the distance getting closer to where we were.
I turned my head to look over my shoulder when his warm touch left my shivering body. I watched the turtle walk back over to his motorcycle and stand it up. I knew he had to leave; I didn't think the NYPD would be too fond of a giant reptile walking around New York. He rolled the bike so he was standing next to me once again.
"There's one thing we've gotta get clear with each other." He said, not looking at me. I still stared at the side of his face, watching the red tails of his mask blow back in the wind.
"O-okay..." I agreed, feeling unsure of myself. Was he going to change his mind and hurt me? But wouldn't he have done it already if he was going to? My subconscious reasoned with me.
"You can't tell anyone about me, alright? Nothin'. Nada word." He looked at me narrowed eyed with such persistence I knew he took it seriously," Bad things would happen to my family and I."
Family? There's more of him? Not that it's a bad thing of course. If they all go around saving teenage girls from gangsters in the middle of the night, they wouldn't be too bad.
"Of course... I'd never tell anyone." I told him and offered a small smile. He gave me a smirk in response and straddled his bike. I stepped back when he cranked it up and stood, leaning his weight on one foot to keep the bike steady.
"Good." He grinned at me," It'll be alright, I promise, kid."
But then a thought struck me," Wait! Where can I find you? Will I see you again?" If he was going to get Stella back, I needed to know where I could find him. That, and maybe I could ask him some questions about him and his family. I was curious.
"Just look to the shadows, sweetheart. I'm always there." With one last grin, I was left in the mouth of an alley with the thoughts of a green shell and red mask in my mind.
