Chapter Two: Someone, Somewhere

ALEX

Jack's behaviour on stage meant his guitars ended up broken more often. We were playing in London, and Jack's guitar needed an emergency fix before we performed tonight. Zack recommended this music shop where they fixed instruments quickly and to a high standard at a low price. He also mentioned a hot girl worked there who fixed guitars which had Jack excited and jumping off the walls.

We'd spent the day walking around London and had come across a girl busker who had some serious skills when it came to songwriting, singing and playing the guitar. Her name was Kara, and I'd never seen a girl who didn't care what people thought of her appearance, a few people in the crowd made comments about her half-shaved head and wacky waistcoat. Jack shouted that she should sing Backseat Serenade and Kara's voice was like no other. She put a twist on some of the notes, and her voice could do crazy things.

As we walked into the shop, I couldn't help but think that Kara could be so much more than a busker. Hopeless Records needed more female artists; I made a mental note to send the label the video of Kara I recorded.

The manager who told us his name was Chris said that his best employee was working on Jack's guitar and it would be finished soon and that it was in good hands. Just then someone shuffled out of the back room, and my eyes were drawn to a familiar waistcoat.

'Chris I just finished, I sure as hell better get double pay as I need to pay last months rent and this month.'

Kara turned around to face the three of us, her eyes widened as she took in me and Jack, 'wait a second you're purple and streak guy who gave me forty quid. I'm also guessing one of you requested All Time Low.'

Jack grinned next to me and stepped towards Kara with his hand extended, 'Jack Barakat, I hope you've taken care of my baby.'

Kara smiled and shook his hand before motioning to the door behind her, 'your baby is right through that door Barakat.'

Jack whooped and all but ran towards the back room with Chris in tow, leaving Kara and me alone. Kara moved around the counter and perched herself on a stool. I leant against the counter.

'So you fix instruments as well as perform, is there anything you can't do Kara?'

'Well, Alex, I can't touch my toes with my fingers, and I can't touch my nose with my tongue.'

I laughed and ran a hand through my hair. It was now or never to tell Kara my plan, 'so I kind of recorded you earlier and I wanted to send it to my record label because they're looking for female artists to sign. I think you need to be signed Kara.'

She just stared at me like I'd grown a third head.

'I'm not that good Alex.'

I scoffed, 'you're amazing Kara, your voice can do things I would love to do. I can see you on stages singing for hundreds of people. Would you be more comfortable with a band behind you?'

Kara chewed her lip and shuffled on the stool, 'I'm used to people staring at me Alex, I know my eyes and overall appearance isn't everyone's cup of tea. I would never be able to find people who would want to work with me.'

Yes, Kara's eyes were different colours, but she couldn't let them hold her back.

'If you get signed and wanted a band then you could have a say in the members, Kara. Come to our show tonight and see what we're like as a band and then give me a yes or no answer.'

Kara looked like she was having an internal battle with herself, but she put on a smile.

'I'm not about to turn down a free All Time Low show.'

'Oh my god marry me, Kara. I love you so much.'

Jack burst out of the backroom and ran at Kara before pulling her into a bear hug, making her laugh and hug him back. Something panged in my chest at the sight; I couldn't have feelings for her this fast could I?

'Alright, Jack let her go before you break her.'

Jack pulled away with his hands raised before wiggling his eyebrows in my direction, 'I won't break Kara, I'll leave that to you, Alex.'

Kara nearly choked on the water she was drinking, and I felt myself going red, Jack sure knew how to make the mood awkward. I scratched the back of my head and dared a glance at Kara who was trying to make herself look busy.

'Hey, Kara you should come to our show tonight.'

'Thanks, Jack but Alex already asked me, and I said yes. So it looks like I can keep an eye on your guitar in case you break it again.'

She reached over the counter and patted him on the shoulder. I pulled out my phone and opened the contacts, 'put your number in Kara that way I can text you the details.'

Kara took my phone and entered her number. While she did that, I shot Jack a death glare for putting me in that situation, and all he did in return was a smirk.

'Here's your phone back, Alex.'

'Now me Kara, I want to talk to my guitar buddy.'

Jack pushed past me and handed Kara his phone. Did he like her too? Or was he being his usual over-friendly self? I hoped it was the second option.

'Okay, Jack I guess you can also have my number, as long as you don't send me inappropriate drunk photos. Promise?'

Jack grinned before shrugging his shoulders, 'I can't make any promises Kara.'

I knew all too well that Jack liked to send drunk photos. I checked my phone, and my eyes widened as I saw the time.

'I hate to cut this party short kids, but Jack and I are running late.'

Jack checked his own phone and showed me an unread message from Zack. Jack paid Chris and put a generous tip in the jar with Kara's name on. He picked up his guitar and walked towards the front door before waving over his shoulder.

'See you tonight Kara, now come on Gaskarth you can see your girlfriend later.'

I wanted the ground to open and swallow me whole. Over my shoulder, I swear I saw Kara blush slightly, and her boss nudged her while chuckling.

'See you tonight, Kara.'

She waved at me as I followed Jack. As soon as we stepped onto the street, I slapped my best friend across the back of his head. He whined, and I rolled my eyes.

'Oh, you know what that was for Jack. What the hell? I'm trying to talk her into signing with Hopeless, and you probably scared her off.'

Jack rubbed his head and pouted while he hailed a taxi, or attempted to, 'chill man Kara seems cool. Plus did you see her blushing? I think she likes you too. See how it goes tonight, invite her to drinks after the show and get to know her better.'

Jack had his wise moments, and this was one of them. But for now, I had a show to prepare for. I just needed to make a mental note to add Kara to the VIP list.
