Chapter 29

"So what happens now?" Tyler asked, keeping his eyes on the road while his hands tightly gripped the steering wheel.

We were miles and miles apart from Jared, but we were both still paranoid that he was going to pop up out of nowhere and ram his car into Tyler's. He's stooped lower than ever trying to keep what he was doing a secret from Leah that this idea of him purposely crashing his car into Tyler's was not far-fetched.

I glanced out the window at the cars that were driving along beside us. There was a black shiny minivan to our right, that had a blonde woman in the driver's seat and a group of young girls dressed in soccer uniforms sitting behind her. They were all smiling and singing, completely content.  The car to our left held an old couple who were laughing with each other, wearing matching sunglasses as they cruised the road.

Not one of them had a worry that a boy with unsettling intentions was after them.

I looked back at Tyler and sighed. "I guess we try to get over to Leah's as fast as we can, before Jared can beat us there."

Tyler nodded solemnly and stepped harder on the gas pedal. We began to speed up faster and faster into the unknown.

The truth was, even though I finally had proof for Leah, I was still really nervous as to how she would react.

Ding-Dong, Ding-Dong, Ding-Ding-Ding-Dong.

"Geez Kaitlyn! Lay off the bell." Tyler reprimanded me.

"Sorry, it's just that I'm really anxious, okay?" I replied, shoving my hands into my jeans pockets.

Tyler looked around him nervously. "I know, I am too, okay? I feel like everything could instantly go wrong, any second now."

I was about to push on the door-bell again, when Leah's mother opened the door, dressed in a business suit and wearing a nice up-do that complimented her blonde hair.

This was actually the first time that I had seen Mrs. Caywood in a couple of months. She was always busy, flying in and out of state, always at conference meetings or calling a client. Even though she was a busy women, she was a sweetheart and caring mother for Leah. I remember from the countless times that I had stayed over at Leah's house while her parents were away, how her mom would call her multiple times that day just to check in on her and make sure everything was alright and that she would be there as quick as lightning if there was a problem.

Now as she stood before me, she gave us a warm, bright smile and enveloped me in a hug. "Kaitlyn, sweetheart! It's been so long!"

"Hey, Mrs. Caywood, it's great to see you. How are you?" I replied.

"Oh, sweetie, I'm doing great and listen, I would love to catch up hunny, but I have to run over to the office. Leah's upstairs, okay? And tell your parents I say hello, and that I'll be coming over to catch up with them soon, too, alright?" She gave me another hug and then embraced Tyler as well, even though I think they've only met once before briefly.

As she pulled out of the driveway in her sleek black car, she waved goodbye and we headed inside.

"She's so nice," Tyler said as I shut the door.

I nodded. "I loved coming over here when I was younger partly because of Leah and partly because of her. She made the best brownies ever."

Tyler smiled at that and we quickly climbed the stairs two at a time to the second floor. When we reached Leah's room, I heard a deep voice responding to her higher-pitched one.
