Chapter 11
"What are you guys having today?" The waitress at Pete's Shack asked us. After we left the movie theaters, we all decided to walk over to Pete's Shack to grab something to eat.
Leah studied the menu for a second. "Can we have a large pepperoni pizza?"
The waitress nodded and wrote it down on her note pad. "Anything else?"
After we told the waitress what we'd like to drink, she quickly left and disappeared into the kitchen.
"It's weird, I've lived here all my life and I've never noticed this place," Chris said. He looked around the room in awe. We were all sitting in a booth. Leah, Jared, Liam and Natalie sat across from me. While Chris, Brooke and Tyler sat on my side.
I turned to look at Chris. "Really? It's a pretty small town and you've never noticed Pete's Shack before?"
He smiled at me. "I know, I'm pretty sure I've been everywhere there is to be around this town, but not here."
Leah grinned at him. "Well, now that you've seen Pete's Shack, you've been everywhere."
"I guess so," Chris replied, smiling again.
"I've never seen you at our school, do you go to RiverView High?" Tyler asked.
Chris shook his head. "Nope, I go to CrestWood High."
I stiffened at the words CrestWood High. That's the high school that Nathan goes to. Nathan, the guy who flirted with me while he had a girlfriend. Nathan, the guy who until now, I completely forgot worked here.
"Oh, cool." Tyler told Chris.
"I heard CrestWood has a good football team," Jared said, while playing with a napkin holder. "Is that true?"
"Yeah. And I'm not only saying that because I'm on the team." Chris said.
Everyone laughed at his remark.
"But, we're going on to state championships in a couple of weeks." Chris continued.
Murmurs ran along our booth, with "Great jobs" and "Good Lucks" for Chris. Apparently our whole table had their attention on him, he was the star of this group date.
Soon the waitress came back with our drinks and pizza. The smell of pepperoni and cheese immediately wafted up to my nose.
We began to eat, talk and joke around. It was going along pretty great, Leah was right to be excited about this group date. It was a lot of fun. I didn't even mind that Jared was sitting across from me. He actually smiled at me a couple of times and we had a normal conversation about our classes. I couldn't believe how nice he was being. But, I was having a good time so, I didn't give it much thought. However though, even if Chris was being totally cool before, he began to make me feel a bit uncomfortable.
It all started with his hand on my thigh. I practically jumped out of my seat when he gently placed his hand there. I looked up at him, as if to say "What are you doing?" But, he apparently didn't understand the look, because he grinned mischievously at me and squeezed my knee. I just smiled at him, and tried to nonchalantly move my leg away far enough, so that his hand would fall off of my thigh. I was definitely not alright with that.
Then, he kept staring down at me with this strange look on his face that I can only describe as determination. I couldn't figure out what he was determined to do exactly. I was freaked out though, because guys don't just look at girls like that, unless they're planning on doing something bad later. When I asked him what was wrong, he just shook his head and went back to talking to the guys.
