For the first time in a very long time, Severus Snape was excited for Halloween. He impatiently taught classes all day, but as soon as his last class ended, he went home.
Stepping out of the fireplace, he could hear his husband in the other room, talking to their toddler. Severus brushed off his robes and smiled at the decorations on the walls. A week before Halloween Ella decided she wanted to decorate the house. She got Harry to draw pumpkins with her and hang them on the wall. There were also skeletons, ghosts, and monsters scattered about. Ella was so excited to show Severus when he got home.
"Daddy!" The four year old Ella squealed, pulling Severus out of his thoughts. She barreled into Severus. Sev laughed and scooped the half dressed child into his arms. She was wearing a tutu and a T-shirt but she obviously wasn't done. "Ella," Harry sighed walking into the room with a smile. "It was supposed to be a surprise." Harry was already in his costume. He was dressed like Dracula. His hair slicked back with an old fashioned suit on and a black cape.
"I'm very surprised." Severus laughed and looked down at the grinning girl in his arms. "What're you supposed to be?" Severus asked making the little girl pout.
"I'm a fairy princess!" Ella said as if it were obvious. Severus had no idea what a fairy princess was and decided it must have been from one of those muggle films she watched. Severus had seen some but none of them had a fairy princess. "Of course you are! Why don't you finish getting dressed?" Severus asked as he walked toward Harry. He set Ella on her feet and let her run into the room. "Your costume is in there too." Harry said as Sev wrapped his arms around Harry's waist, pulling him close to his chest.
"Ella picked it out." Harry leaned up to kiss Severus. Severus smiled against his lips as he kissed him back.
"Ewe!" Ella giggled, making Severus pull away. "Daddy come on!" She pulled Severus into her room. On her bed was her long sleeve pink shirt, a wand, and a silver tiara. Next to it was a gold crown, a button down white shirt, and a black vest.
"You're a king. Dad said you wouldn't want to be a queen." Ella explained as Harry put her pink shirt on her.
"Dad was right." Severus leaned down to fix her pig tails. Ella had long black hair and bright green eyes. She let Severus put her tiara on her before she grabbed her 'wand' and raced out of the room. "How much candy has she had? We haven't been trick or treating yet." Severus asked."She hasn't had any." Harry stated. When Severus raised an eyebrow, Harry sighed and gave a smile. "We made cookies... And cupcakes. And we decorated them. With frosting. But she only had one. Of each. But she ate all of her broccoli today." Harry justified. Severus just shook his head but couldn't conceal the small smile that was set on his lips. He grabbed the clothes and walked to his own room to put on his costume. He didn't want to disappoint his little princess. Fairy princess. Severus corrected his thoughts.
After being dressed, Severus looked in the mirror and placed the crown on his head. He stood in front of the long mirror and made sure everything was in order before he turned and walked out of the room. "You know, I've never seen a king look as amazing as you do right now." Harry said, walking up to Severus. Harry leaned on his tiptoes and kissed his lips. Severus grinned before kissing him back. "Where's our fairy princess?" Severus asked.
She must have heard him. She came bounding in the living room with her fake wings bouncing behind her. "Is it time to go?" She rocked excitedly on her heels. Harry nodded and she grabbed her plastic pumpkin. "Come on." Harry smiled and took Severus's hand as their daughter raced to the door.
At four years old, Ella was very smart. She was very much like Severus. She wanted to know about potions. She was excited to learn anything and everything. She was outgoing and competitive like Harry. She was always ready to play and try something new. She was considerate and caring like both her dads. If you asked one of them, they'd tell you that she was the best little girl and no one could compare. It was her idea to do this. She heard about it at her muggle school and could barely contain her excitement when she got home. Harry, who never went trick or treating, agreed immediately. Harry thought his husband might be against it but Severus took one look at Ella's excited eyes, and agreed.
Walking hand in hand down crowded muggle streets, Severus felt like his life couldn't be better. Ella skipped ahead of the couple and Harry grinned at the sight of her. Ella's fake wings bounced with ever step she took. "How'd we get so lucky?" Harry asked, looking up at the love of his life.
"I have no idea." Severus answered. He never thought this would be his life. A few years after Harry graduated, they finally met again... At Dumbledore's funeral. It wasn't the ideal place but it happened. They talked for hours. Talking led to kissing and kissing led to confessing how much they loved each other. Severus proposed to Harry a year later and Harry said yes. They were married soon after that. Severus didn't think it got any better but Ella came along. Her bright eyes and loving smiles. As long as that girl was happy, Severus was happy. As long as Severus and Ella were happy, Harry was happy. As if on cue, Ella looked back and gave her dad a wide smile with a few missing teeth. As the night went on, it inevitably came to an end. With a tired fairy Princess on his back, Severus walked into their house and took her to her room. He got Ella ready for bed. As he brushed her hair, she yawned and Harry came in. "Are you ready for bed Ellabear?" Harry asked. She nodded tiredly and climbed into bed.
After good night's were said, Severus and Harry retired to their own room. All was quiet as the Jack O'Lanterns went out and Halloween night came to an end.
