I don’t know what I was expecting, but this was definitely not it. For the first time in weeks I felt better.  I could laugh and smile, and the last thing on my mind was Kendal.

Lewis, Derrick’s friend, was the nerdy type of guy. He came here to give me some sort of therapy, but he gave me exactly what I needed. I told him everything that was built up inside of me, things I needed to get out. And then he made me laugh. He got my mind of Kendal’s death.

“I would have never guessed that you were a closeted nerd.” He said as he laughed at me. I told him I used to collect comic books and he thought it was hilarious.

“I was not a nerd, I just thought superheroes were the shit when I was a preteen. Totally different!” I said.

“Except, there is not a difference. At all.” He said as a threw a pillow at him. He ducked and it hit the door.

Derrick came barging in and stood in the doorway with his arms crossed. “This is ridiculous! You are supposed to be talking about what happened, not having a pillow fight!”

“You’re right, sorry bro.” Lewis said. He pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and pulled out a notebook pad. “And how does that make you feel?” He asked Derrick.

I started laughing so hard I rolled off the bed. I saw Derrick laughing, too, which was a good sign. I hadn’t seen him laugh in weeks.

“I’m sorry. I know you are no therapist, because they are a lot better than you are, but you are good to talk to. And I know that Olivia needs someone right now.” Derrick said as he helped me off the floor. I sat on the bed and he took a seat next to me.

“We already talked about everything. Lewis is so great. I got everything I needed to get out. I feel fine; I’m even going to call Miranda and Vicki in the morning! I haven’t felt this good in a long time.” I said.

“I’m glad I could help! But I should probably be going. I need to go help my mom out, after her stroke she needs my help.” Lewis said as he stood up.

He was such a good guy. He helped his mom, he volunteered at an animal shelter, worked at a daycare place, and went to work in the coup kitchen every Saturday. I have never met anyone like Lewis before, always willing to give and not expect anything in return.

“Thank you for coming. It helped me so much. I don’t think you’ll ever understand how much.” I said as I stood up and hugged him. “Will you come back?” I asked.

“If you want me to I can come back tomorrow morning. Bright and early.” He said.

“That would be perfect.” I said.

“Bye Derrick. Bye Olivia.” He turned and left our apartment.

The second the door closed behind him I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Every emotion I felt of Kendal came flooding back. I was weighed down with sadness and being angry.

I had only known Lewis for a few hours, but I knew I couldn’t function without him. I needed him back in my life.
