Chidori's story was loosely inspired by a series of rumours about Nō-hime, the wife of Oda Nobunaga. Nō was supposedly married to her husband for the express purpose of spying on him, and they had a rocky relationship, despite his description of her as having "the mind of a genius and the appearance of a goddess." In spite of this rockiness, she seems to have grown close to his children, her step-children. Although it is not clear what happened to Nō-hime after Oda Nobunaga's death, at least one story places her living out the rest of her life with one of her husband's younger sons.
As for names, Bennosuke was the childhood name of several famous people, most notably Miyamoto Musashi. Chidori and Amari Katsushiro's given names are both taken from characters in movies directed by Akira Kurosawa. Chidori is the name of the foolish young woman in “Sanjuro”, and Katsushiro is the name of the youngest of the “Seven Samurai”.
