Rizal was a polyglot person. The one who is able to understand (read and write) many languages. He mastered as many as 22 languages: Spanish, Latin, Filipino, Greek, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, Ilokano, Bisayan, Chavacano, Subanon, English, Malay, Hebrew, Catalan, Dutch and Japanese.
While traveled, he often earned his keep by serving as translator and made him as a guest at the captain's cabin because of his remarkable charisma, charm, and wit. He was so conservant and curious observant with other passengers as looking for conversation to prevent boredness.
