Cult is different from masonry in which stressed to the point of condemning the Church ways or any that should be away their mission for a betterment and struggle.
Masonry (or Freemasonry) is a fraternity or brotherhood organization. It is also the oldest fraternity in the world. It was in Europe born and spread all over the world.
According from Filipiana Library, the basic aims of the masonry are "to strive for moral betterment, work for the welfare of others, and bring about a universal league of mankind."
Other masonic principles like individual liberty, freedom of speech, equality, religious tolerance, separation of Church and the State, and others.
When Rizal came to Spain for the first departure in 1882, he changed his pace about himself. He became active in social reform and other ideals of common people. He didn't pursue to call the saints for his travels. Hence, he was influenced by a Masonic thought so he lambasted the Church in the Philippines and their ways and realized what he could do for the enlightment, at the same time, he worked for his first novel, Noli Me Tangere, which exposed the social heinous cancer and evil ways of the Spanish Regime in the Philippines.
Rizal also adopted the penname and masonic name, Dimasalang.
And...did you know that all of those masons or active in any part of this were automatically excommunicated (remove your Catholic faith) as this was decreed since 1738. Then, reaffirmed by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines in 1990.
Rizal made a Master Mason on November 15, 1890 in Madrid, Spain.
However, a Cult is a religious group. Worship and thanksgiving to their only god or gods. They have many beliefs saying the truth lies from there within and it so secret to many outsiders. Religious movement like Rizalistas is the example of this.
