"Emma? Are you awake?" A voice said. I stayed deathly still, not opening my eyes. I was currently lying on the cold, hard floor of the slammer, and Newt had unlocked the cage only a moment ago. I could basically feel him staring at me, and it took everything in me not to move or make a single sound.
After I was silent for a couple of seconds, Newt sighed, followed by a thump sound almost making me turn around. I didn't know whether it was him leaving or him just sitting down, but either way I wasn't going to move.
"I'm sorry, Emma. I'm sorry that I locked you up in here." Newt finally told me. My heart clenched in my chest and a lump began to form in my throat. "I know you're awake, Love. You can stop ignoring me now."
"Nah." I muttered, shifting slightly. I opened my eyes, blinking slowly. They were slightly blurry, because I had actually fallen asleep but something woke me up just before Newt had come. "How'd you know I was awake?"
"Well for one, you were holding your breath." Newt smirked, tilting his head. It was then replaced with a cute smile, his eyes lighting up. "And also, you weren't snoring, so that was a total give away."
My jaw dropped. "I do not snore!"
Newt just shrugged, looking upwards. "You kinda do. It's cute though."
"Shut up." I muttered, rolling my eyes. "I'm trying to ignore you."
"I see." Newt trailed off, glancing around silently. "I'm sorry."
"Yeah, you've said that."
"But it's true." He tried to convince me, stepping forward.
I raised my eyebrows, turning over. "Is it?"
"Come on, Love, don't be like that." Newt complained, a sigh escaping his lips. I clenched my jaw, sitting up and turning back towards him.
"I can be however I want to be." I told him, giving him a look that basically said, 'choose your next words wisely'. Newt's nose twitched and he poked his tongue against his inner cheek, glancing around awkwardly. I smirked, knowing that I had one.
"Well I mean, if it's regarding your safety, and you do something stupid, then technically –"
"I'm going to punch you in the face." I stated, interrupting him. Newt threw his hands up in defence, smiling innocently.
"You wouldn't." Newt said, a daring tone to his voice. The corner of my mouth tilted upwards and I stood up, dusting myself off.
"Wanna bet?" I asked, taking a step forward. He chuckled, following in my footsteps and taking a step forward at the same time as I did. His eyes glimmered mischievously, and he raised a single eyebrow.
"That I do." He whispered, now merely inches away from my face. My heart skipped a beat as I stared up at him, my breath wavering. He wiggled his eyebrows, a knowing look in his brown eyes. He knew that this time, he had one.
"Well..." I muttered, not knowing what else to say. Any type of intimidation that I thought I might have had before had completely disappeared now.
"Well." Newt said back, leaning close to my face. My breath caught in my throat when his lips brushed the corner of my mouth, teasing me. I swallowed the sound probably loud enough for him to hear. "Do you still want to ignore me?"
I bit my lip, glancing away for him for a split second. My eyes met with a piece of wood that was sticking out of the wooden caged door of the slammer, sharp enough to impale someone. I blinked slowly, my hands starting to move on their own. I placed them around his neck, leaning slightly into him so that he stepped back once. My eyes widened when the reality hit me. I was being controlled again.
