I knocked on Katie's door and  her mother opened it.

"Natasha, hello." She looked surprised and tried to hide her disappointment. She took in my hair dusted with snow, the bouquet of flowers and the box of chocolates that I was holding.

"Hello, how's Katie?"

"She told you?"

"Yes."

"I suppose you should come in then."  She said as she opened the door wide and moved out the way so I could get in. "Go into the lounge, I'll go up and see if Katie wants to see you."

I felt bad but I always did when I was near Mrs Peters, she wasn't a pleasant woman. She used to be though but I don't know what happened, she would take me and Katie all over the place when we were younger, I would have considered her as a second mother but what happened I don't know. One day I just turned up to their house and instead of a bubbly smile greeting me I got a "Oh. You." and that was that.

I walked into the lounge and awkwardly stood by the door  when Mr Peters saw me stood there, Mr Peters was a lovely man, we was always so cheerful and optimistic and even now when his daughter was near death he could put on a convincing smile.

"Tasha, hello, have a seat." He nodded his head towards a burgundy armchair that was placed opposite the TV. I sat down placing the flowers and chocolates carefully on my lap.

"How's school been?" Mr Peters faked an interest.

"It's been better."

"Hmm..." Mr Peters said, his mind was clearly elsewhere.

"You can come up." Mrs Peters voice came. I gave Mr Peters a quick smile, which was returned, and I made my way to the stairs. Mrs Peters was stood at the top looking very stern and almost vicious, she had curly brown hair and wore a black dress, it was her work uniform, but it made her look all the more evil. I began to make my way up and as I walked past Mrs Peters I felt her watching me and it felt like knives being dug into my back. I took the familiar route into Katie's bedroom and I knocked on the already opened door.

"Yo, Katz." I smiled weakly as I saw my friend lying in her bed, there was dry blood on her pillow from nose bleeds and she looked so tired.

"Hello, Tash." She barely formed her words, she looked so empty.

"How you keeping?" I asked.

"I've been better."

"I'm so sorry." I was surprised at how neither of us had begun crying yet.

"I've had it un-diagnosed for too long, you know. If we realised sooner I would be able to have treatment." She told me, the only thing she was moving was her mouth.

"I brought you lilies, roses and tulips because I know they're your favourites and I also have those Asda's own chocolates that you love so much." I put the flowers and chocolates on her bed side table, "I'll always be here for you, Katz. I love you so much, and I will do anything in my power to help you."

"It means a lot to know, but there isn't anything...." She began to whimper, "I have 2 weeks, Tash."

I began to cry.

"Is there nothing - "

"Please stop . I know you want what's best for me but there's nothing that can be done and this just makes me feel worse." Katie cried.

"Katie, I love you and I will always be here for you. You're my sister. We are in-separable, not even death can keep us apart." I tried to smile.

"Thank you." Katie smiled, but I saw past it. I looked at her face and saw all the pain she was feeling.

Not even 2  weeks later my best friend died.
