'Is this what she wanted to tell me about? That I'm his prisoner?'
Sonic sat there, his mind nothing but distant from reality, his body was getting colder and colder as his hundred mile stare continued to extend its self.
Vanilla handed him over to Shadow silently. Mephilis said nothing to object, only turned and slithered away to return to his own tribe. Shadow carried the living zombie back to his home where he placed him in his room and left, shutting the door without a word.
Sonic sat there in the blackness, cold and alone. He began thinking of all the people he knew, family he would never see again, friends he would be forced to forget, and a entire world of people he saved who would imagine the worst. All the things he wished he would have said the day he went out for that run, wished he would have hugged his mother one last time, listened to his uncles lectures, and told Sally he loved her.
All the things he would never get to do, or the battles he would never get to fix. He was just expected to start his life all over again with these giant beasts.
"I don't wanna be here any more."
Sonic hoist himself to his feet and ran for the door, upon opening it he found Shadow staring down at him with his arms folded over his chest, his cold un-ruling eyes, narrowing sharply. Sonic shivered slightly, desperately trying to summon enough courage to speak.
"Where are you going?"
Sonic quivered under the large naga's cold-heartless stare, he sank deeper into himself, no longer capable of words he surrendered and returned to the bed with his tail tucked an his ears slicked back against his head.
The naga entered the room shutting the door behind him, he stood there for a moment watching the terrified hedgehog, he looked almost the same as when they had first met, but he could sense something was off, something was different. He knew speaking to him would be worthless and that if he touched him he would become terrified of him just like he was that first week he was here, but he knew he had to do something. He slithered over to the bed an sat down next to the small blue boy, his gazes softened once more to his normally gentle domineer.
"Sonic, listen, I-"
"I wanna go home." Sonic cut in, his voice was quiet ans shaky but it was clear he was serious about the matter, yet he never spared the elder one a glance. Shadow stared down at him slightly bewildered by the outburst.
"I understand..." Shadow slid his gaze to the ground, his voice gentle and soft but it had something embedded in it that hid something dark. "But I'm afraid you can't leave."
Tears painted the youngsters face, all his fears were coming true in a matter of seconds, "Please, I have family and friends, I wanna go home to them, I promise you I won't ever say a word to them about you or anyone else."
"That's not the reason you have to stay." "Then what is?" "I can't allow you to leave, because Scourge would hunt you down the second you step foot of my lands."
Sonic was silent for a moment, but knew he was fighting for his freedom here, he couldn't just give up because of some naga that wants him for dinner.
"I don't care about that big stupid bully, I wanna go home and I will, I can protect myself, I'm faster than him!" Shadow sighed, slightly annoyed at the boys over confidence. "Sonic it's not-"
"You can't keep me here forever Shadow! I don't belong here, I belong with my own kind! I have people I care abo-" "You think I don't realize this?!" Sonic blinked at the sudden outburst, tears dotting the corners of his eyes, Shadow took a deep breath an sighed, glancing down at the frail child.
"You think I don't know this? That you have a family and friends at home? If you truly love them though you'll stay here, you may be able to defend yourself but say they can't? Scourge is no fool, he knows if I let you leave you'll go straight home, leading him to every single person you care about."
Sonic stared at him, his eyes empty, his face blank, images of all the people he cared about running and screaming, bleeding, being killed or eaten alive by the heartless reptile. He began to sob uncontrollably, his breathing short an quick and his face turning red, burying it in his knees and hugging his legs against his chest.
Shadow was baffled, he'd never seen such a sight not even from a child, but he understood, Sonic was loosing everything he loved in one day and while he didn't cry, when Maria died he felt this way, he understood Sonic's pain, understood his fear, his broken heart. He picked up the broken boy, caressing him in his arms as if he were his own child. Some where between the sobs Sonic found chances to breath, Shadow stroked his quills as gently as he could. "Sonic I'm sorry, I'll find a way to get you to your family."
Sonic looked up at him, his face red and covered in tears. "R-Really? Y-You would do that?" "Yes, but I'm afraid you wouldn't be able to stay there, Scourge would quickly figure out that I sent you home and follow your trail."
"That's okay, I...I just wanna see them all just one last time."
"You astound me Sonic."
Sonic wiped the tears from his eyes looking at him slightly confused. "I-I do?"
Something was exchanged between them, neither knew what it was but the could feel the change in the atmosphere.
