you're a murderer
The streets of Gotham were almost always dead silent at night, only the sounds of cars driving by filling the empty air for the people who had to walk home.
Non-deadly fun was always hard to find in a city like Gotham for Marina. Any sort of excitement always coming with its own set of consequences.
Her long maroon chipped nails clinked against the back of her phone as she tapped her nails along the smooth surface of it.
She brushed back a strand of dark brown hair that blew on her face as she walked down the familiar path home, stopping in place when she heard two voices.
Her own curiosity got the best of her as she made her way over to the sources of the voices - two men that looked about her age, one of them dead.
She didn't let the shock reveal itself on her face, afraid of what the man with the knife might do if he was aware of her fear.
But it seemed as if her worry didn't even matter when she saw his equally scared face; his mouth hanging open and the knife dangling in between his fingers.
When she saw him glance down at the knife and back at her, she took a step back with a mischievous smile on her face at the leverage she had against him; she was now a witness to his murder.
"Ah ah ah." She wiggled her finger at him, masking her own fear with the slight excitement she felt from the situation at hand. "Don't even think about it."
He looked defeated, disappointed even, as he looked in between her and his only gateway path, unsure of what his next move should be with the stranger.
"Your secret's safe with me." She brought her hand up to her black painted lips and made a 'zipping' motion. "Why'd you do it, though?"
The man looked a bit taken aback by her question before putting the knife down from its hostile position, making Marina feel more relaxed.
"I don't think that's a quite appropriate question to ask."
"I don't think it's appropriate to murder someone in cold blood either, yet here we are." Marina mocked his previous words, folding her arms against the chest of her dress and raising an eyebrow at him.
"It's completely justifiable." The man known as Edward Nygma stuttered out to the woman in front of him, his hands starting to shake due to the situation he hadn't prepared himself for.
"So." Marina took a dangerous step closer to him, her heels clinking loudly against the concrete of the street. "Justify it to me."
"He was an abuser." At the word 'abuser', it felt as if Marina's world froze as her past memories replayed in front of her; her sudden confidence boost sinking back down.
"Hello? Are you okay?" Ed hesitantly waved a hand in front of her face when he saw her frozen in place, just a foot away from him.
The knife was already hidden away in his pocket, in case of any other person walking by and seeing them.
"Alright." She sighed, ignoring his previous question and feeling defeated due to her sudden insecurity. "I'll see you tomorrow, then."
"What do you mean?" Edward asked her, one of the few times that he was genuinely confused in his life. The thought of seeing her again had never crossed his mind in the few minutes they've met.
"I'm starting my new job at GCPD tomorrow." She explained, as if it was the most obvious fact in the world. "You work there, don't you? I saw you on the tour."
"Oh. I, uh, I'll see you tomorrow." He scratched the nape of his neck, unsure of what to make out of the previous events as he watched her walk off into the distance.
