joshua felt an uncomfortable, ache-like feeling penetrate his chest when he read mia's message. it was like a heavy weight began to pull at his chest and every time he took a breath, a strike of pain would flash through him and nothing could be done to stop it.
the next day, he was surprised to see a message sent by mia.
mia: are you okay?
he frowns. why would she ask that?
joshua: yeah, i'm ok are you
joshua: ?
he mentally curses to himself at his inability to use basic punctuation. mia would always correct him on it and he would take note of her words, only to find himself forgetting her advice shortly afterwards.
mia: i'm fine. i was just worried because you always text me back straight away, but you didn't say anything to me yesterday.
joshua: i fell asleep sorry
joshua: did you enjoy spending halloween with your boyfriend?
he then, in contrast to his previous query and the tone of the message, smiles to himself for remembering the all-important question mark.
mia: it was ok. he fell asleep straight away, though. we only watched one movie.
joshua: what is he called?
mia: james.
joshua: is he nice
joshua: ?
mia: he can be.
mia looks over to her boyfriend who's asleep on the sofa beside her. of course, she loves him but he lacks enthusiasm and commitment, two things which were never a problem for joshua when they were together.
joshua: i'm sorry for breaking up with you three years ago
mia: you should be.
