important author's note: this is the last chapter, i just feel like it's the perfect time to draw this book to a close. thank you to everyone who has read this book and i'm sorry if you think it's too short but i never intended it to be a long fanfic, more like a short story. i'll definitely be writing an epilogue which will most likely be out tonight, and if it's a popular idea then i'll possibly consider writing a sequel! love you all xx
joshua: i'm in lax now
mia: i'll be there in like five minutes.
joshua: i can't wait to see you
mia: i can't wait to see you, too.
joshua breathes in the californian air when he steps outside the airport. he stands by the doors, his black suitcase by his side and his phone glued tightly in his hand.
to say that he's excited to see mia is an absolute understatement. during the whole journey of his flight, he was picturing their reunion in his mind, practicing what he would say to her but now, he has no plan, he just wants to see her again.
the last time he saw mia was in a random supermarket on the outskirts of la. she was trying to reach her favourite chocolate bar (which joshua had bought her a basket full of for her birthday) but because of her relatively small height, she couldn't reach it.
he remembers standing behind her and reaching for it, retrieving the chocolate with ease. he even remembers her expression when she turned around and saw who had helped her out. she looked simultaneously grateful and annoyed which caused him to chuckle.
"thanks." she muttered, awkwardly taking the bar from his hand.
"bye, mia." he smiled, knowing it was the last time he'd see her for perhaps an extremely long time.
he smiles at the memory, probably looking like a weirdo to the strangers surrounding him. he stands on his toes and glances over the crowd, immediately noticing the unmissable girl that is mia.
she's wearing an oversized grey jumper and light blue jeans, something which she always used to wear that joshua remembers thoroughly. her hair is tied messily into a bun but somehow, in joshua's eyes, she still manages to look like the prettiest human to ever grace the planet.
even from a distance, joshua can tell that she's changed slightly. her makeup is different, she's grown slightly taller, and her facial features have noticeably matured. also, her hair is now a shade of eccentric purple.
she scans the crowd and when her eyes finally land on joshua, she freezes. she stares at him for a few moments as he does the same, the two of them absorbing each other's presence.
joshua has changed too, mia thinks. he's grown a lot taller, his eyes seem to be even larger and more glittering than they used to be,and his style has changed from dark shirts and grey joggers to a white shirt and black jeans.
god, she's missed him so much. and god, he's missed her so much.
almost in unison, they both walk through the crowd of strangers. time seems to stand still, and the world around them seems to disappear. and when they finally meet each other, standing only inches away, joshua is the first to make a move and hug her tightly.
he holds her tight, his arms wrapped firmly around her frame just like he used to. she buries her head into his shoulder, now the perfect height to do so and feels a few tears drip from her eyes.
so many emotions merge into one as they embrace for the first time in three years. ever since they separated, there's been an empty space in both of their hearts. but now, that space seems to have been filled.
"oh my god, mia." joshua mumbles, resting his lips onto the top of her head and kissing it over and over again.
she grips the back of his shirt as tears fall unstoppably from both of their eyes.
finally, after what feels like years of embracing, they pull apart and simply stare into each other's eyes. joshua lifts his arms and wipes mia's cheeks with his thumbs, chuckling at the state of them both.
"i've missed you so much." mia whispers and grabs his shoulders, pulling him towards her and crashing their lips together.
they haven't kissed in years but somehow, the feeling is natural to them both.
and as their lips move together slowly, joshua can't help but think how lucky he was that mia still had the same number. if she didn't, he could have never sent her those messages and he wouldn't have heard her voice again. but mia did have the same number, and joshua couldn't feel anymore grateful and lucky for that.
even three years can't break love. nothing can; it's a bond stronger than no other.
"i love you." joshua whispers once they pull apart almost breathless.
"and i love you too, joshua hong. thank god you decided to send me those messages."
