The humming of the air conditioner was the first thing you've heard. You look at the desk and was unsurprised to see nobody behind the librarian's desk. You passed by the desk and out of habit looked at the logbook of the students who've entered. There wasn't anything out of place, in fact the place looked well-kept. You dearly hoped there was no zombie here.
There was something that caught your attention though. There was a noise that was coming from the room. The library was moderate in size. From where you stand you can see the different sections that were separated by shelves of different sizes.
It was a typing sound. You glance back at the desk where there was an electric typewriter by the edge. Nope, it wasn't that. It was coming from farther to the right end of the room.
You couldn't see from here because of the massive shelves blocking the view but you were familiar enough with the library to know that there were desks there reserved for student assistants.
You walk towards the sound, all the while looking out for zombies hiding behind the shelves. You never know. Anyway you've reached the last tall shelf that was blocking your view and saw a familiar figure hunched over one of the library's computer.
"Excuse me," you called.
He whipped around and you saw that you've startled him. He righted his eyeglasses and you approached cautiously. He was a fellow student but you didn't know him personally.
"H-hey," he stuttered but cleared his throat. After that he seemed to realize the state you're in, from your bloody blouse to your shorts. His eyes widened as he stared on the bloody knife on your hand.
"W-what the hell? Get that away!" he exclaimed.
He shook his head, muttered something then proceeded to type more vigorously.
You don't think that it would be a good idea to put the knife on the pocket of your shorts so you placed your bag on your front and put your weapon inside the bag's front pocket instead.
There are two doors at this end and you see one slightly open and leading to a small toilet. The other one clearly led to an office.
You silently walked towards it and peeked on the darkened window on the door. Sure enough there was the outline of a desk and someone staggering that you're guessing wasn't a normal human anymore. Your fingers itched for the protection of the knife but you didn't take it out.
The door was closed anyway and you didn't think that those zombies could open doors. The SA in front of the computer didn't seem to be bothered at all so you relaxed yourself. You turned towards him and walked away from the door.
"What's that?" you ask. Maybe he's looking for a way out? Or maybe contacting people outside, you thought hopefully. But then you remembered that there weren't any internet connection inside the campus. Students weren't even supposed to be using their gadgets inside the classrooms. Or at least when the teacher is in.
He said something but you didn't hear so you just walked at his side and looked over his shoulder. You made a step back after what you realized what he's so busy doing. He was cataloguing the library books!
"What are you doing? Are you even aware of what's happening now?" you ask in disbelief.
"I have to do this y'know?" he said as he continued typing. "I can study here because I'm a student assistant."
"Yeah, sure." You replied weakly. There is seriously something wrong with this guy.
You take the seat in front of the computer next to him and open your bag. There was something oddly comforting with seating next to a person who thinks everything is still perfectly alright. Or maybe you're just happy to see someone who's still alive despite being a bit unhinged in the head.
"Aren't you hungry?" you ask while rummaging in your bag for your phone. There were still three packets of cookies on your bag but you won't share unless he asks for it.
"Nah, I've drank coffee already."
You look at the desk near him and saw the half finished cup of coffee. There was a thermos and some packets of instant coffee. Clearly having only caffeine in his system was affecting his whole thought process.
"Oh. Come with me to the clinic. We have to find a way to contact outside and get out of here."
You have your hand up clutching your phone while looking for any change in the signal bar. You noticed that he had stopped typing and looking at him you saw that he was glaring daggers at you.
"Mr. Hipolito needs this immediately." He said tightly, referring to the librarian.
"I-" you look at him unsurely. "Yeah, sure...Stephen." You squinted to read his name on the ID in his front.
You must've said the right thing because he went back to working.
You shake your head. Clearly this guy thinks that everything is still normal. Just this morning you thought like that too, you told yourself. You hope dearly that he knew better than to open that door leading to the office.
You stand up and walk around, still looking for signal. It gets up to one bar, then disappears again. You walk and walk until you've reached the other end of the library, away from that Stephen guy.
Two bars! Your phone beeped with a message. You open it and find that it was from your mom but the text was dated yesterday afternoon. You still couldn't call with the signal. Maybe if you walk a little further in front of you?
Just then you've noticed that you're just in front of the door to the kiddie section, the one with the jigsaw mat, plushies and well, kiddie books.
You remember going here on during lunch break with friends or if you wanted to take a nap when still in grade school. Maybe you can call home inside; it looks like the signal bar will be full once in there.
You put your hand on the knob, turned to open it slightly and immediately closed it again. You're sure that going inside would top all of your nightmares, getting attacked by zombie Dana being only second. The moans you've heard when you opened it where numerous and high-pitched.
There was a glass window on the upper part of the door but was being covered by decorations with the words 'WELCOME' and 'Kiddie Corner'. You decided to take a peek and put your hand on the welcome sign to push it aside.
Just then you hear the scraping of a chair and turn around to see Stephen walking towards the door on his side of the room.
"Don't-!" you call out but it was too late.
Stephen had opened the door wide and had even called it out, "Mr. Hipolito?"
