"Wait, so I have to take in another gay seventeen year old?" Winter's sister, Autumn, asked in disbelief. Was she kidding with her tone? I wasn't sure.
"Please, Autumn? She has nowhere else to go!" Winter pleaded as I sat next to her, staying silent.
Autumn laughed. "No, I'm not refusing! It's just, how many other gay friends will need shelter? I'd like to know prior to you telling them they can stay," she explained lightly, but her tone changed slightly more serious as she said, "Though I have to figure out how to tell Matt."
"Matt's her boyfriend," Winter informed me. "He started living here a few months ago."
"Oh," I said. "So, I can stay here?"
"Of course, I'm not gonna leave a kid on the streets," Autumn smiled.
could feel my whole face light up. This girl has always been there for me. My mom kicked me out for liking girls, and I was homeless for barely a day. Still, that time was spent with her. Winter's kindness is as rare as two snowflakes exactly the same.
"She's not really a kid, Autumn," Winter pointed out jokingly.
"You're both under 18, therefore, you are children," Autumn joked and Winter rolled her eyes.
There was a slight lull in the conversation, but then Winter spoke, "I'm not gay, you know. I'm pansexual." It was obvious she was trying not to sound like she was reprimanding her older sister or showing off.
"Oh, right," Autumn noted. Another lull, but then she added, "I do find it a bit strange that you're attracted to pans. Why not pots, you know?"
Silence. And then we all understood it at the same time and laughed, as Winter jokingly hit her sister. "You know what I mean."
"So what now?" I asked.
"Do you want to go back to your- to your mom's house? Get some stuff? Break your mom's heart as we walk out the door?" Winter suggested, trying to lighten up the mood again with that last one.
"Sure, I guess, I just have to make sure I'm wearing waterproof mascara," I jested dryly.
"Well, good luck guys! I'm going to steal Matt away from work for some lunch, do you want me to bring back anything for you two?" Autumn questioned, as she reached for her purse and keys.
"No thank you. I think we'll grab something on our way back," she informed her sister, to which Autumn nodded and left the house. Winter turned to me. "Do you want to shower or anything? I can lend you some of my clothes?"
"Oh sure, thanks," I responded, standing up, Winter doing the same.
"Alright, you can use the bathroom in my room. I'll put some towels and clothes outside the door," she told me.
"Okay, thanks Winnie," I smiled, walking to her room while she opened what I guessed was a closet, and pulled out a spare towel. Stepping into her bathroom, I closed and locked the door behind me. I quickly stripped off my current clothing, and stared into the mirror.
For once in my life, I didn't hate the girl staring back at me. It's not to say I love her, but I didn't loathe what I saw. By these means, I smiled as I stepped into the shower.

"You look cute in my clothes," Winter commented as I walked into the living room.
"Thanks, you ready to go?" I asked, shuffling my feet nervously at the thought of going back home. I need to stop calling it that; it's not my home anymore.
"Yeah," she stood up, grabbing her keys off of the hook by the front door. "You know, I can do this alone, if it's too much for you."
The answer was clear, so I shook my head. "No, no, I feel like I have to do this."
"Okay then, let's go," she followed me out the door, locking it behind her.

Winter knocked loudly on the door of my mother's house, and only a few seconds passed until my mom's smiling face was revealed as she opened the door. Once her eyes landed on me, her face fell.
"I told you never to come back," she practically growled, her wrinkles looking more vengeful in this light. How could she feel no regret for the deal she's done?
"Really? You just told me to get out, you never said I couldn't come back," I said, smirking, though really I was breaking on the inside. "However, I am only here to get my stuff. Then you can continue pretending that you don't have a daughter."
With her lips pressed into a thin line, she hesitantly opened the door to let us in. "Get your things and get out."
"What a bitch," Winter muttered as we walked past my mother.
"I know," I whispered, only thinking so now. I used to love my mom. "Come on, my room is upstairs."
Once we entered my room, I grabbed a duffle bag that used to be for when my family would go on vacation, although those days were gone. Quickly, I started stuffing clothes into it, along with other things such as my makeup, photos, and other sentimental stuff I couldn't leave in the hands of my mother. I zipped up the duffel bag, then grabbed my school bag and guitar, before I nodded to Winter, letting her know it was time for us to leave.
"Alright, you sure you got everything?" she asked before we exited the room.
"Yeah, I think so, I might need to come back in like, a few weeks or so for the rest of my clothes, but I doubt I actually will," I assured.
"We should just buy you a whole new wardrobe," Winter joked.
I gasped in mock offense. "Are you insulting my style?"
"Possibly," she laughed.
"I love my depressed punk look, I think it fits my personality," I countered, laughing as well. "Now come on, let's get out of here."
We both went downstairs, heading for the door. We were almost out of there when my mother interrupted us, "Just to be clear, you are never to show up on my doorstep or I'll call the cops for trespassing."
I chortled sarcastically. "Maybe I'll show up just so you can explain to the police that you're a homophobic bitch." Smirking, I waved at my mother as Winter and I left the house.
