Maya
It was late. Eric and Jack wouldn't be coming until early morning. It was about eleven, and Shawn still wasn't here. Amy and Alan slept in Cory and Topanga's room. Cory and Topanga slept in Riley's bed. Riley and Auggie are in Auggie's bed, Josh is sleeping on me floor next to Auggie's bed, and my mom is sleeping on the floor in Riley's room. While I'm sitting on the couch, where Shawn is supposed to sleep because I was forgotten in the sleeping arrangements.
I had just sat there silently the whole time. I almost bashed my brain for how long it was. It was so boring to just sit there.
I start staring at the door. Waiting for him to come in. He better have a good reason for not showing up sooner.
But I only wait, and wait.
I get up and go to the fridge. I find some juice and pour myself a glass. I stand over in the kitchen and wait for him to get back. I wander around the house for about another half an hour before I decide to call him.
It starts ringing about four times before it goes to him voicemail. I hang up the phone and call him again. The same four rings happen, and no answer.
"Hey Shawn, it's Maya. Listen I'm up if maybe you thought everyone was asleep. If something else then call me back. Bye." I hang up. I twiddle with my phone and then call Farkle. I knew he'd be asleep.
It rings twice and then he answers.
"Hello?" His voice comes through groggily."Hey Farkle, it's Maya."
"Maya it's like 11:30 why're you up so late?" He asks me.
"Well. I've been waiting for Shawn and he's still not here. He was supposed to be here around ten. I've called him and he's not answering." I tell him.
"You called me because...?" I rolled my eyes even though he couldn't see me.
"So I could talk to someone." I explain.
"Maya, I love you- I really do. But if I'm caught talking to you this early in the morning, I will have no chance to see you tomorrow." He tells me. I don't exactly think he was completely awake though.
"Okay, fine." I huff. "Go on back to bed. I love you, goodnight." I tell him.
"Goodnight girl." I hear before the line goes dead. I sigh and put my phone down. I finish the rest of the juice and go back to the couch. I get comfortable and pick my phone back up. I debate whether to call Shawn again or not. My thumb hovers over the call button.
My head shoots up as I hear the door knob wiggling. I shut off my phone and wait for him to open the door.
I hear the door creak, but I can't really see anything. It's dark, and the lights are out. Shawn flips the light on and sees me.
"Oh, Maya you scared me." He takes a breath of relief. He had boxes and bags hanging in his arms. Presents.
"You're late." I plainly say.
"Yeah. I know I am." He replies to me.
"My mom started to think you weren't going to show up." I lie to him. He looks at me as if he's transmitting a question through to my brain.
"Did she really?" He asks, a little nervously. I guess he was worried because him and my mom have sort of been together for a while. About three years.
"No." I smirk. "But if you hadn't made it she would've known by the time she woke up. Even if she haven't seen that you weren't here. She's got this thing for knowing when people aren't there. Like a sixth sense."
"So that must've made it pretty hard for you to sneak out." He says to me, putting the presents around the tree.
"How would you know if I tried to sneak out?" I ask him.
"I always snuck out. Knowing when other people have, it's like a sixth sense." He retorts. This was really weird and it happened often. We spat at each other like we were angry. But we really weren't angry.
"Yeah, well life experiences make people more aware." I sigh. He looks at me, then continues scattering his presents.
"So, how's it been since I've been gone? Anything new with you, your mom, Cory, Topanga, anyone?" He asks.
"Well Topanga still owns the business, my mom still works there, Cory still is a teacher so same old." I say quickly.
He walks over to me. And gives me a look.
"Maya, c'mon. Tell me what happened." He says. How could he know something was up? He couldn't. It had to be a guess.
"What do you mean Shawn? Nothing happened to me." I try to say defensively. I stand up in front of him. He gives me a seriously? stare, then gives me wide eyes.
"Oh my God. Maya you're pregnant."
How could he know?
"I... I-I.. Uh.." I couldn't form the words to his sudden correct answer.
"Am I right?" He asks me. I nervously bite my tongue.
"Unfortunately." I say. "Now I don't mean that I want to kill the child. I just, I don't think I'm ready. And I don't even know.." I trail off. I look up at Shawn. For once, he held his arms out. I didn't hesitate.
He sets me down on the couch, with him sitting next to me. I don't cry, but helplessly rock in his comfort.
"Y'know Hart, you never fail to amaze me with your great timing." He says.
"What do you mean?" I ask him, looking up at him. He shrugs and pulls out a small, velvet box.
"I wanted your okay to ask your mother to marry me tomorrow."
He wanted to what?
He opens the box.
"If I get your okay, I'd like to give her this."
The ring was stunning. It was prettier than the one Farkle fake married me with. I just stare at it. I didn't know what to say. How much time did I have to think about this?
"I mean you don't have to decide now, you can wait a little while. But if I get your okay. I planned to ask her after everyone opens their presents." He says as if he reads my mind.
"I was planning to tell everyone about the baby after we opened presents." I had actually made the decision myself. Though it looked like Shawn had almost forgot I was having a baby. I don't know why he'd forget.
"Uh, I mean, we could do it at the same time. Although, it'd make me look like crap if I asked her after you said what you needed to." That was true, "Maybe you'd like to announce it after me?"
"Whoa whoa." I slow him down. "I haven't even said yes yet." I tell him.
"Oh, right." He says. "Please try to tell me by the morning. In the mean time, let's get some sleep. Where am I going?" He asks.
"Couch." I tell him. He quietly laughs for some reason.
"Okay where are you going?" He asks.
"I don't know." I say. "I didn't get somewhere to sleep." Admit to him.
"You what?" He asks. "Oh no. Oh no no no. You're sleeping on this couch." He tells me.
"Okay and where have you been sleeping the past five days?" I ask him. He opens his moth but has no good response. "Okay, here." I throw a blanket over him and myself. He doesn't take long to fall asleep. While I had some thinking to do.
