"Wake up sleepy head." I open my eyes the next morning to see Violet and Chase standing over me. "Rise and shine," Violet says as she smiles at me."You're on lunch duty, mate," Chase says with a grin. "For today. And only today, we will help you. Since by the way, you look like this is your first time trying to scrounge for food." I put my Astros cap on backwards like I always do.
"What do you mean?" I look at him, perplexed.
"Dude, your preppy grey sweater vest says it all. We're also going to be getting you some new clothes." He shakes his head and laughs.
"Hey what's wrong with my sweater vest?" I look at my shirt in disappointment. I guess it is kinda lame. After all, I'm not a rich kid anymore. Sadly. "Fine." I roll my eyes in frustration.
"Do you have any money, because we're broke. Obviously." Chase asks, smiling.
"I have nothing to my name." I open my empty wallet to see nothing, but the picture of my parents. I glance at the photo, then put my wallet in my back pocket.
"You guys go ahead. I'm going to stay and watch camp." Kino says happily.
Then I feel my head tingle.
"Okay let's go." Violet looks at me.
"You really like this telepathy thing huh?" I turn to look at Violet with a smile. She smiles back.
"It's not as cool as it looks." We start down the ladder. "At first when I got my powers, I could hear everyone's thoughts within a block. It hurt my head, but I learned to control it. I just have to learn to ignore what I don't want to listen to and hone in on what I do want to listen to. Simple." She smirks.
"Uh hello?" Chase shakes his hand between us, clearly annoyed. I guess it is pretty weird seeing two people look at each other and smile for no reason."You guys have got to stop doing that. It's weird." Violet and I look at him and chuckle.
"Okay, today we will be going to....." Chase quickly pans the area, glancing at all the stores. "Cra-Z-Dollar. The guy there won't notice us grabbing some food." Chase grins and points at a corner store a few buildings over.
We walk out of the alley and onto the sidewalk. Chase turns to me, a serious look on his face.
"You ever stole before?" Chase whispers.
"No," I reply, disagreeing wholeheartedly. "I'm not a criminal."
"It's not a crime if you're trying to survive," Chase says back to me.
"It's still a crime." Violet rolls her eyes.
We walk for a few more minutes, talking along the way before we casually enter the store.
"Alright. Let's do this. It'll be easy. In and out." Violet looks at both me and Chase.
"Ughh. I hate this mind crap." Chase says out loud. The cashier behind the desk looks at him suspiciously.
Violet gives a quick nod to me and Chase. We walk down the snack aisle and started grabbing anything that will fit in our pockets. I've never stolen before. Ever. It's a guilty feeling, even if it's for the right reason.
"Where's Chase?" Violet asks in an angry tone, using her telepathy.
"I think he's in the next aisle. What is he doing?" I pop my head out and look at him two isles down. I throw him a "What are you doing?" look.
"Oh, hey. I'm just checking out these really cool watches." He says out loud as he looks up at me. He's sure isn't the subtle type.
"That's not what we're in here for, Chase!" Violet is beginning to get pretty irritated. "We're not thieves!"
