We finally pull up to this massive building. With thousands of teens in the long yard in front. I see some of them standing against the tall brick wall with their foot propped up against the side with a cigarette shoved behind their ears. While others are scurrying around like little mice trying to avoid eye contact with those toolish looking type of people.
I hit the power button on my phone making the screen flash to life. I hit the two parallel lines that appear in the top of my screen, bring the car to a dead silence. I take the AUX cord in my hand and pull gently from my phone. My mom takes the keys out of ignition as I gather my bag and my belongings and stumble out of the car. Drew of course had to take his sweet time getting out, while I was just standing there sending him daggers through my eyes staring straight at the window trying to hurry him.
Finally after like 5 minutes his door pops open and he too stumbles out of our car with his belongings.
Mom was already ahead of us walking at her normal pace -which in my opinion is TOO fast- looking back at us with a look that says "hurry up!" I quicken my pace and decide to take a glance at my surroundings. So many pairs of eyes -mostly the guys'- are stuck to me as I am walking past all the students. The guys' make whistling noises at me as I walk by. I get very uncomfortable with all this attention but, at the same time I sorta enjoy it..... I never got this much attention at my old school.... Some of these guys are quite attractive so I threw a slight smile in their direction showing them I noticed.
My mom opens up one of two glass doors that're in front of us and swings it open. I grasp the door in my hand and push it open so Mike doesn't have to touch the door it'll just be barely closing by the time he walks in. I walk in and the building smells of new textbooks and of freshly sharpened pencils. I follow my mom because she seemingly knows where she's going. Soon enough we're in front of a long glass window that leads to the front office. Mom puts her hand on the handle and twist it open and she leads us into the office. There's a light skinned lady who would appear to be in her early 40's sitting behind a tall counter with glasses laid at the tip of her nose as she stares at a computer screen. "One second" the lady pronounces from behind the screen. After a few taps from her keyboard she looks up and greets us with a huge -but fake- smile "Hello I am Mrs. Smith, how may I help you today?" she questions.
"Hi, I am Lesley Hart and these are my two kids, Lexi and Michael. And I was told to come here earlier so I could finish up some paperwork to get these two registered into the school."
"Oh ok. Um let me see here. *types something up on the computer* How do you spell your last name?"
"Oh um. H-A-R-T" my mom chimes to the lady
"Ok!" *types in something else* "H-A-R-T" the lady mumbles as she types. "OKAY! Um they're already in the system! But we do have an emergency contact form, lunch registration form, and a informational form for you to fill out. But other than that your kids are free to go they're in. And here are your schedules." the lady says. She gleams as we take the schedules from her hands.
"Well okay! Um I hope you two have a great day today! Make some friends and DON'T get yourselves into trouble! Okay?"
"Yes ma'am" Mike and I say in unison.
"Okay now... I love you two!"
"I love you too..." again Mike and I say in unison
She kisses the tops of our heads and pulls us in for hugs before the bell rings signaling us that school has just begun.
