Chapter 48 - New Encounters
It's been almost two months since I started working at The Den and a lot has happened. As Carmela assured me the first week I started working for her, I have received a very nice paycheck every week on Friday in the amount of five hundred dollars. I still couldn't believe I had an actual job that paid a more than decent amount of money. I finally had options, options that I never would've had if it weren't for Carmela and her generosity.
I even gave myself permission to take advantage of those options by splurging a little. However, I still was a little tight with my money, but I wasn't so tight that I couldn't treat myself every now and then and I did. I made sure to do something for myself at least once or twice a other week or so, but if you asked Carmela she'd argue that I wasn't spoiling myself nearly as much as I should. But, I couldn't get myself to go crazy with spending my hard earned money because no matter how hard I tried to push it away, I knew there would always be that simmering worry in the back of my mind making sure I never went to far, making sure I remembered where I came from and how easy it could go back to those hard times.
The Den itself has been a huge pill to swallow, but I've made it work and made myself open my mind just a little. I still wasn't all the way comfortable with being around strange people, who were also vampires, every night; creature I never thought even existed until I met the Sullivan's, but I realized that I would soon be apart of a vampire family, a highly powerful one at that, and if I didn't at least find a way to deal with the world I'd unknowingly been thrown into I would never be able to survive an eternity with the Sullivan Brothers.
Plus, after witnessing the things that went on every night at The Den, watching the vampires take part in drinking blood from willing, sometimes even desperately begging, humans, the openly sexual, lust filled atmosphere that always seemed to envelop the club, I was kind of forced to accepted that this was their way of life and what they did when they came into the club wasn't really wrong. No one was being harmed and everything was consensual. I'd never seen anyone dragged into the club against their will or made to do anything they didn't already want to do. So after working behind the bar for almost two months, my mind somehow turned what I used to think was horrible and disturbing to just... a regular late night at The Den.
I'd only seen one altercation happen while working and it was between two male vampires who always frequented The Den like clockwork every Friday and Saturday night. They'd gotten into an almost violent back and forth that ended with the both of them being hauled out of the club by security. It was a terrifying thing to see only because the arguing went from a few loud threats to bared fangs and dark eyes in a matter of seconds. I had to take an extra long break after that.
