Her pillow was shaking. Buzzing underneath her.
"Go away."
Pippa's mumbles were incoherent as she pulled a hand out from under the warmth of her quilt and fumbled for her phone.
Who was calling her this early in the morning?
"Hello?" she snapped sleepily.
"Wake up lazy!"
Her best friend and the only person crazy enough to call her this early was on the other end of the line.
"Why?" She groaned, annoyed. "Why would you make me wake up like this?"
"Because I'm an hour away and coming to see you!" He laughed, taking obvious pleasure in winding her up.
"You're coming home!?" Pippa sat up, grasping the phone in her hand.
Her best friend, brother from another mother, partner in crime and fellow weirdo was finally coming home.
"Yep, I got away. Mum's out seeing family so I've got a day to kill."
Andrew Finch, or Finchey as everyone seemed to call him, had left the small town of Howden on the first day of the summer holidays, as soon as exams had finished, and headed straight for the bright lights in the big city of London.
Against his will.
His father of whom he hadn't seen for 8 years had appeared on the pavement of their college and to avoid making a confrontation, he had left with him without a fight.
"I can't wait to see you!" she squealed, throwing off her quilt and jumping up out of bed.
"I've missed you too." He chuckled, "I'm about to go through a tunnel, see you soon."
The call clicked off.
Standing, with a large smile on her face, Pippa threw down her phone on the bed.
Glancing around her room, she caught her reflection in the mirror.
Her hair was sticking out at wild angles, her pyjamas crumpled and eyes bright with anticipation.
Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath, her mind playing back her dream.
Finchey was real. Finchey was real. Finchey was real.
The thought played on repeat through her mind.
As real as her dreams seemed to her, that was all they were.
The emotional investment she was putting into Bellamy would make one hell of a therapy session. Her fingers were already itching to start writing down her dream in as much detail as she could remember.
"You awake Scallywag?" Her dad called out from the other side of her bedroom door.
"Yeah! Finchey will be here in an hour!" She replied, deciding to concentrate on reality for the moment- taking a hair brush to her hair to start the taming process.
"Really?" He said, "I better start cooking breakfast now then!" He disappeared down the hallway chuckling to himself.
It was no secret that when they were together, she and Finchey could eat anyone out of house and home- and usually did.
The doorbell rang exactly an hour later.
"Do I smell pancakes?!" Finchey shouted, letting himself in.
"Hey!" Pippa launched herself off of the final step and into his arms, squeezing him tightly.
"Hey to you too." He mumbled in reply, squeezing her tightly in return.
