“Good morning mum” Pippa said as her mother waltzed into the kitchen. Only 7:30 and she was already up, showered, dressed and made-up to perfection.

Pippa on the other hand had just rolled out of bed and as she had not inherited the genetic ability from her mother  to pause time for 2 hours as she got up and dressed she had just about managed to wrap her dressing gown around her waist before tumbling down the stairs for food.

“Morning darling” she replied, helping herself to the bacon dad was cooking.

“Hey!” He protested but proceeded to give in his fight to save his breakfast when his wife pouted then proceeded to give him butterfly kisses all over his cheeks.  Seriously guys, get a room.

“You want any of this Scallywag?” Her dad asked pointing to the remaining slices of bacon in the frying pan.

“Nah, I'm good with cereal thanks dad” she replied smiling at his affectionate nickname for her.

She'd had it for as long as she could remember, he said he called her it because of the way her hair stuck up on its ends when she would come down for breakfast every morning. When she turned 13 it began to annoy her so she'd spend 15 minutes brushing it methodically so it would go flat. Of course less than an hour later it would begin to fly in all directions again. By the time she turned 18 she’d given up ever trying to tame it, so here she sat. Scallywag.

“Plans for today?” Her mum asked finishing her sandwich in a few bites.

“Nothing much, I thought about going to the library and then perhaps for a walk.” She said, spooning her first spoonful of Cookie Munches into her mouth. Her mother frowned displeasingly.

“I know your friends are all away on holiday, but that doesn't mean you should spend every day doing the same thing over and over again. There are only a few weeks left until you start lacking for university, make the most of it!” Finishing her life lesson for the day her mother stood from the table, took a swig of dad's coffee and grabbed the car keys from the bowl on the side and after calling out her goodbyes rushed out to work.

Pippa sighed sadly, she could never admit that that was all she actually did during the day and her dreams.

Catching Pippa’s sigh her dad sat down and after taking a small chew if his bacon sandwich looked at her deep in thought.

“I know you wanted to travel this summer and I'm sorry we didn't let you, but this year has been hard for us financially. Travelling just isn't something we can afford to do right now.” He looked down at the table sadly.

“Daddy, it's ok. Uni will be an adventure and I'm really looking forward to it, plus I like the library so it's not like I'm sitting bored at home all day watching TV like other teenagers right now.” Pippa smiled reassuringly, knowing how much it pained her dad that he could no longer afford to take the family on their yearly exotic holiday.

Ever since he retired early from his high stress job to return home to them they'd been pinching the pennies, not that Pippa minded, not at all. She'd have given up everything if it meant that her dad didn't have to go away to work week after week, only coming home briefly on the weekends. But she didn't have to, because he was here and that was enough.

After sitting in a comfortable silence while they finished their breakfast Pippa went into her bedroom to get ready to go out. Quickly showering, using her favourite coconut shampoo and conditioner before dressing in dark snug fitting jeans and a baby blue cotton vest top. Slipping into black pumps and grabbing her purse she made her way out of the front door, the bright warm sunlight kissing her bare shoulders.
