"Come on! We're going to be late!" I looked up from my customer and at my best friend.
"What are you talking about?" I heard her exasperated sigh then I looked at her again. She just stared at me as if she wasn't being annoying. I rolled my eyes and continued ringing up my customer's things. Something was really wrong with that girl.
I heard the sigh again but decided to ignore it this time. Right on queue she started tapping her freshly manicured fingernails on the conveyor belt.
"You're total will be $83.07."
"Oh my heavens. That's a lot. You know what? I think I'll remove some items. Hmm." The woman started to think out loud of which things then she started to ask for my opinion. I suggested she keep the mangosteen. They attacked fat and she had a lot of it but I didn't tell her that.
She was still thinking out loud about what to keep when the sound of a gum bubble being popped happened.
I jumped and so did the lady.
"Jesus! This is an organic foods market! Not only are organic goods expensive but you picked up the heaviest fruits and you're wondering why it's so much? Lady I gotta be somewhere!" Gracie then continued to chew her gum.
I bit the inside of my cheek and turned my attention to the customer, "You are taking a while."
With all the pressure, she finally caved and paid the initial amount.
"Thank you! I hope you come back and shop with us!" I said.
"Yeah and bring a list next time."
The older woman's mouth fell open at the comment as she looked at my friend. Grace just smiled and waved until the lady was out of sight.
"I clocked you out. Let's go!"
I locked my register, stuffed my apron into the shelf under the counter, grabbed my car keys and left.
"Why are we rushing home by the way?"
Grace looked horrified, "You forgot!"
I shook my head as I looked into her eyes for an answer. Then I remembered and I felt my eyes open wide, "Holy shit!"
***"Papi! I can't find it!" My room was a damned mess at this point. Clothes that my mom neatly folded and put into my drawers decorated my bed. Shoes that were placed perfectly were now mixed and matched all over my floor.
A mess.
"Porque usted no esta buscando nena." I heard him yell from downstairs.
I groaned, flopped on the bed then buried my face into my pillow as I screamed.
"What's wrong nena?" I turned away from my pillow and came face to face with a belly. I craned my neck upwards and saw my mom.
I sat up and folded my arms, "I can't find it."
"Si. Escuche. But what is it that you're looking for?"
I looked down at my fingers only to have my chin raised. I looked into my mother's round brown eyes full of light and love. I instantly started to cry. She sat down beside me and rocked me until I stopped shaking.
"Now tell me."
I sighed and mumbled my answer.
"I can't understand a word you're saying, my love."
Then I mustered up the courage to look her in the eyes and disappoint her, "The music sheet."
Her facial expression didn't change but she moved a curly strand out of my face, "You have plenty of music sheets. Hell, I have some. What's the problem?"
