"Because you are not giving me a chance to explain.", Richard said. Why would she give a chance? He could be using her as a replacement for her mother. "You were together with my Mom. So how can I give a chance?"
Richard then walked towards the nearest bookshelf and picked a book, placing it onto her hands. Elizabeth automatically looked down and what she saw right in her hands. A copy of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
"Even a character in every book always give a chance.", he said. "Daisy Buchanan still accepted Jay Gatsby as he was, even if he was rich or poor."
"But Jay and Daisy did not get together.", Elizabeth rebutted. "Jay died without knowing Daisy actually prefers her husband over him." She then placed the book in Richard's hands as he accepted. "Our relationship isn't like those stories. Have a good day."
Elizabeth shuffled back to where she was supposed to be. As she looked back, she could still see Richard eyeing on her. It pains her, so does he.
------
It was pouring outside, heavy as it was like yesterday night. The storm outside was how Elizabeth was feeling as she sat on her bed. The pillow she was hugging gave her the comfort and warmness, but still she felt cold. Her heart wasn't at the right temperature.
As she recalled the incident at the library, she could not forget how Richard looked at her. His eyes. They weren't as bright as how she first met him on the train. Elizabeth picked up her phone as she scrolled through the contacts till she found R. Matthews. Hesitation started to build up when she thought of calling or texting.
I should be more thoughtful, should I?, she said to herself. Even God can't decide for her. Once she thought of her decision, Elizabeth decided to text Richard and apologise. Text successfully sent and she then laid on her bed with her pillow in her hands. Now, her temperature was just right.
Ding, the message notification sounded, awoken Elizabeth from her rest. She grabbed her phone and slide the lock screen. She then digested the text message she received from Richard, word by word which then warmed her heart.
"It's alright. Don't be too hard on yourself. Rest well."
And then off she went to her dreamland.
