Mason looked over at me, and raised his eyebrows. I shrugged, and then he focuses his attention on Liam, who was lifting a ton of weight. I sat down on the floor, legs crossed while doing my homework. Well, copying it from Mason, but I'm writing it down all by myself.
"That's a lot of weight," I hear him comment.
But Liam shakes him off. "I'm trying to get ready for the game tomorrow."
"You need a spot?" Mason asks, concerned for his friend.
"He'll be fine," I say at the same time Liam spits the word "No" like venom.
Me and him share a look, but then I look away at Mason, the corners of my mouth curling. "Do you?" He glares at me.
"This is just my warm-up, you ass. And I am letting you copy my homework, don't forget that." Quickly, I shut up, finishing the assignment.
Liam leans back down, with his hand on the bars, ready to lift the weights. I watch as Mason puts down his little weights and makes his way toward the beta, not confident he could actually lift all that without a spot. In my mind, I feel guilty keeping all these secrets from him. Doesn't Mason have the right to know that his friends are a werewolf and a hunter? But at the same time, maybe him not knowing is keeping him more safe.
With Mason at his side, Liam sits up, confused. "Wait, what are you doing?"
"I'm spotting you." He answers.
"I said I didn't need one."
"Liam," I whisper.
"Are you kidding me?" Mason lets out a short laugh. "This is like three hundred pounds. You'll kill yourself."
But the werewolf just lifts it by himself with no struggle. When he sits up, he gives a cocky grin to our friend, "Do I look like I need help?"
I stand up just as Mason shakes his head with a scoff. He walks out of the room, and I sigh, glaring at Liam who looks oblivious.
"What?" He asks bitterly.
I shake my head, running after Mason. "Hey, Mason! Mason, wait!"
He stops reluctantly, then continues walking as I catch up to him. "You see it too, right? It's not just me. Liam is acting like a total asshole today."
"He just has a lot going on, right now." I try to defend him.
"Apparently not just him. But you, too. The both of you are always gone and busy. Then sometimes when I see you, you have bruises on your body. And Liam can suddenly run five miles nonstop and never gets hurt! I know you two aren't actually dating, but I played along, seeing how long the act would go on until you actually tell me what's really going on, Madison, because that's what friends are supposed to do!" Mason shouts as me, and I look down.
I push a strand of my hair behind my ear, finding the courage to look him in the eye. "I can't tell you, Mase."
He rolls his eyes, scoffing. "That's what I thought." Mason turns away, starting to walk away again. This time it's toward the weight room, I assume to get his stuff. I let him go, standing alone in the hallway.
Keeping this secret is supposed to keep him safe, but at what cost?

Scott and Kira were still not back at this point. The alpha had taken her out on a date, and promised to be back before the game. But they're not. I impatiently tapped my foot on the ground, without a rhythm. My nails were almost non existent at this point.
