The darkness crept around the trees at the edge of the woods. The unnerving silence spread out like a blanket as I clenched my fist, feeling my muscles strain. One sweeping glance backwards into the darkness revealed a line of glittering eyes the familiar golden ones mixed with the yellow ones. "I don't like having them here but I guess we have no choice..."
My eyes scanned the woods until they landed on them. Her dark hair was pushed into a ponytail and she was perched on the branch of a maple tree. Her features were set and determined. The blond woman next to her was leaning against the tree, a look of worry across her pale face. As if she knew that nothing good would come to pass this night.
The sound of movement was so faint, at first my ears didn't register it. My eyes found the source, a line of figures making their way onto the meadow from the other side. Their movements were quick but clumsy, almost as if they were sliding along the grass. A flash of moonlight met the skin of one of the figures and my heart rate increased as I took in the sight, scales breaking their way out from underneath the skin, protruding out and breaking the skin in a scatter of jagged dots. A mixture of green scales and blood tainting the surface. A flash of a jagged tooth and a pair of green illuminated eyes fixated on me.
"They are coming! Attack!"
All I could do was react, my body hurtling forward across the meadow. Claws out, all my senses on full intensity, ready for the impact. One of the lizard like figures crashed into me. Claws flying through the air, the dull sounds of impact, the sharp pain in my shoulder.
Turning away from the pain, my eyes locked on her. She didn't see the half-lizard creature behind her, had no time to react to the shot from the gun. In slow motion, I saw the bullet fly towards her chest as the claws of the lizard figure buried themselves deeper into my shoulder. As the excruciating pain swelled through me I saw her fall to the ground. Her eyes open but unseeing.
I whipped around and faced my attacker, forcing his claws out and swiftly settling the score. A life for a life. I sprinted towards the next attacker, the battle raged on around me as she laid motionless on the ground.
Author's Note: Thank you for reading! If you enjoyed this prologue I would really appreciate it if you wanted to support it by voting!
One more note on this prologue - it's a 'future flash forward of a scene that happens a lot later in the story. That's why I have kept it so mysterious and don't tell you too much about who's POV it is... You'll have to figure that out for yourself when the scene comes up again :)
